Good Single, But The Radio Version Isn't On This,
By Deep83 "the deeper I go" (Ca United States) - See all my reviews

I Love Rocket, and I already have the new album and love that as well. I'm a little disappointed in the single release though, for a couple of reasons. The first is that this is Goldfrapp's first single in a long time to only be released on one physical format (in this case, CD). But I guess that's the state of the singles market nowadays and I suppose we should be grateful we got even one. The second reason is because the radio version is not on this, and the radio versions are usually always on their singles if there is one available (except for Caravan Girl). I love the radio versions because they are usually still true to the the way they sound on the album except 'spruced up' a little bit while being slightly reformatted for radio. In the case of Rocket, a second chrorus is added right after first one, and some other parts of the song are trimmed here and there. In case anyone is curious, radio versions exist for the following singles:Utopia (the Genetically Enriched Mix. It is slightly faster and a little more polished) Human (more upbeat, especially the intro with some added effects. Definitely a lot more radio friendly) Pilots - On A Star (remixed and not as laid back as the album version, and a little shorter) Train (the only difference is a few seconds of the intro chopped off at the beginning) Strict Machine (a little bit shorter and overall slightly remixed) Twist (the differences in this one are more subtle, it is the same time length as the album version but has some added effects) Black Cherry (shorter than the album version and remixed) Ooh La La (same as the album version just shorter, namely the intro) Ride A White Horse (this one is very restructered, the outro was changed considerably. It's slightly remixed, the intro was changed, and more of the "i wanna ride on a white horse" line were added to the song. there is also and even shorter versions which cuts off part of the second verse, why , i have no clue.) Fly Me Away (freshened up a bit but still true to the original, also shorter) Happiness (shorter, overall slightly remixed, also one of the lyrics was cut off , if i remember correctly it was the "donate all your money" line.) Caravan Girl (this one is just a shorter version of the album version) If you want the radio version of Rocket you have to get the promo.

Anyone who likes Goldfrapp will enjoy this cd which contains some cool sounding remixes of "Rocket", from her latest album titled "Head First". Mind you, it is just different takes on the same song but each is very different and provides a nice sonic experience as long as you don't tire of listening to the same song over and over for five times. My personal recommendation is to listen to "Head First" and enjoy it then listen to each of these one at a time but not back to back as it can get to be too much. The cd comes in a cardboard printed sleeve and not a jewel case for those who are wondering about the packaging. The artwork has a touch of sci-fi lusciousness about it - makes me wish album covers were still the common package for music.

It is very possible that Alison Goldfrapp has the most talent of any young artist in the world today. This could be the result of a solid classical training base. But it doesn't stop there, notice the orchestration, melody and lyrics. She innovates by combining vocals with technology to achieve a ethereal sound which is truly outstanding. Why Rocket was selected for remixes and the single off the newest album would not have been my choice. I much prefer I'm A Believer.

I was shocked to see a new Goldfrapp single had just been released, and even moreso that a remix version was available for free via Amazon! The original track itself astounded me immediately, and a quick listen to samples of the (pay) remixes gave a similar effect. I was skeptic. With such a good track that already has great remixes, surely the remix available for free will not be nearly as good? WRONG. This remix is lavish! It stays true to the original version of the track that is so far the *comeback of the year*, but further extends it. It begins rather mellowed out compared to the original, and builds up to what can only be compared to a modern electronica "What A Feeling! (Flashdance)". Congratulations Goldfrapp. You've done it again. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to buy their new album. :) |
