Editorial Reviews

Before the classic, much imitated proto-grunge garage band sound of Crazy Horse was even a concept or option, Neil Young walked into an ill-attended show by the band he had discovered on this very recording - The Rockets, yet another maverick project from the amazing White Whale label, the timeless, hypnotic, crazy yet understated groove of Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina captivated Young, Danny Whitten's out there ELECTRIC guitar, like a shower of sparks, touched a nerve in a man whose own contributions to out there guitar are not too shabby either! The classic sole album by the band who became Crazy Horse (with the legendary sound already in evidence) it doesn't get much better! Exquisitely re-mastered in Rev-Ola sonic sound. Beautiful packaging and notes by the amazing Steve Stanley. A very welcome repress for this legendary album. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars They don't need Neil to rock!, October 14, 2001
By
This review is from: Rockets (Audio CD)
Ok, to start, I am a HUGE Neil Young fan. I got the first Crazy Horse album because i was a Neil fan. That album has become one of my favorites, mainly because of Danny Whitten's brilliantly understated songs. Listening to the Rockets for the first time (I never found the LP) I wonder how much influence Danny had on Neil's guitar style. "Let me go" is just a kick-butt jam with some crazzzzy guitar, and that guitar reminds me a lot of Neil. All the Whitten songs are good, and I was surprised by the second half of the album which featured songs from Leon Whitsell. They are also very good songs, all in all a great album that won't dissapoint real rock fans (Neil Young fans!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Half And Half, March 15, 2010

Funknpunk (Los Angeles CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rockets (Audio CD)
As an Lp this record's Side 1 consist's of Danny Whitten penned tunes except for one song co-written by Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina. Side 2 are song's penned by the Whitsell brother's. There's a definite distinction in the quality and type of song's between Side's 1 and 2., with Whitten's song's getting my nod for being the superior tune's. That being said, my absolute favorite cut on this collection is the Leon Whitsell tune "I Won't Alway's Be Around". Whitten, Talbot and Molina providing superb neo-doo wop chop's that recall their original group Danny And The Memories. The rest of the album is a Pschedelic-Garage-Band-Crash-Pad-Hippie-product of it's time. L.A.'s orange sunshine in the late sixtie's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Debut By The Band That Would Become Crazy Horse, August 9, 2004
This review is from: Rockets (Audio CD)
A marvellous psychedelic pop 60's album with wonderful melodies and harmonies. This is the sound of The Rockets not the sound The Crazy Horse!!!
Music for people with taste and without prejudices.
Enjoy it!!!
