Laurie Berkner = Magic,
By
This review is from: Rocketship Run (Audio CD)
I have two daughters, age 6 and 2. We stumbled upon Laurie's music on Noggin a few years ago, and have been adding her albums to our collection since that time. I can hardly express how this music fills me with joy. I watch my children dancing around the living room to Fast and Slow - they call to me to join them, and then all three of us are spinning around the living room. There is something different about this; we have music by Raffi, Steve and Greg, etc. and at the very best, I can tolerate it. Still, if any music by those other artists pops up on my iPod during my daily commute, I can't get to the controls quickly enough to skip the music. When Laurie comes on, I not only leave it along, but I sing along and usually feel happier by the time the song is over.
For fans of previous Laurie Berkner albums - this continues in the tradition of her previous efforts - inventive lyrics and great, catchy tunes. I would say that the overall production on the album is a notch above previous efforts, and that the songs have a slighly more mature feel without losing Laurie's unique understanding of a child's heart. There are 5 songs that will instantly take their place among your favorite children's tunes: Rocketship Run, Candy Cane Jane, Fast and Slow, Mouse in My Toolbox, and All Around My Room. There is something very special about an artist who can create and perform music that is technically sophisticated, inventive, occasionally hilarious, and doesn't talk down to kids. A treasure for my whole family, for the preschool children I know and work with, and highly, highly recommended.

Masterfully produced and enthusiastically recommended,

Children's music requires the same caliber of intelligent professionalism, originality, and performance standards as does music for adult audiences. The Laurie Berkner Band (consisting of Laurie Berkner in collaboration with Susie Lampert and Adam Bernstein) flawlessly perform and record twenty-four new songs (and in the case of Going on a Hunt in four different musical styles) range from a Brazilian samba to an Irish jig, to a folk song set against a gospel/country background. Lively vocals based on 'kid friendly' melodies (that will also have an immense and immediate appeal to their parents), this masterfully produced and enthusiastically recommended CD album showcases Going on a Hunt-ska (1:11); Mouse in My Toolbox (2:17); Candy Cane Jane (3:07); All Around My Room (1:30); One More Stop on the Train (2:15); Going On a Hunt - blues (1:04); Jump and Fly (2:31); Pigbasket (2:06); Five Day's Old (3:05); Mr. Bassman - and Piano Girl (2:33); Winter Lullaby (2:34); Let's Samba (2:39); Going on a Hunt - conga (1:11); My Blue Sailboat (2:31); Balance Beam (2:04); thunderstorm (2:08); Fast and Slow (2:22); Going on a Hunt - jig (1:10); Farm Song (2:32); Nona (1:29); Walk Along the River (3:16); Going on a Hunt - hand jive (1:43); Fly Me to the Moon (2:44); and the title piece, Rocketship Run (2:24).

To the person who complained about the packaging looking cheap - this was a conscious choice because it is better for the environment than using the "classic" plastic jewel case.
