5.0 out of 5 stars An exellent overview of a modern western Swing band leader, June 3, 2004
By
This review is from: Rockin' Big Sandy (Audio CD)
Although locals in LA and OC refer to him as Anaheim's King Of Rockabilly, essentially Big Sandy plays western swing, however it is a brand of western swing that is equally influened by Louis Jordan and Elvis Presley, as much as influenced by Bob Wills or Hank Penny. In other words the bassist still uses the slap bass technique often used in rockabilly and hillbilly boogie, however there is an exellent steel pedal player(Lee Jeffries), who adds the twang and swing(or jazz) to the efect of sounding more liek Bob Wills' western swing combos. Sandy's vocals are smooth a sort of cross between Tex Avery and Elvis Presley(& a touch of early Roy Orbison(when he was with Sun Records)! However Sandy has his own unique vocal qualitties, he uses the mdifferently from song to song. This cd is essential even if you have most of his cd's, for it features a absolutely fielthy X rated version of Backdoor Dan! You muat hear it to belive it, such dirty words and nasty descriptions being crooned from Sandy's oh so smoooth voice. Exellent into to Sandy, also pick up his latest and most diverse cd It's Time!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Big Sandy and His Flyrite Boys - "Rockin Big Sandy" (High To, May 4, 2005
This review is from: Rockin' Big Sandy (Audio CD)
These boys need no introduction here! This fantastic new CD contains some of the rockin' most tunes that Big Sandy and the gang put out on the High Tone label. Included on the album are cuts from Big Sandy's solo album and the illusive Backdoor Dan 45 (both clean/x-rated versions) as well as cuts from the rest of their releases on High Tone. Also included in the package is a bonus video of "My Sinful Days Are Over". What are my faves? They're all good of course...it's Big Sandy!

Another great album by Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys. We play alot of Big Sandy's stuff on the KNON Rock-A-Billy Review radio show. If you like Rock-A-Billy, Country Swing, Boogie Woogie, then you'll like this album by Big Sandy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful "best of" compilation, with some bonuses, August 30, 2004
This review is from: Rockin' Big Sandy (Audio CD)
The bonus on this cd for me is a unreleased X-rated verion of the Big Sandy specialty Backdoor Dan, and it's nasty, I didn't know Sandy knew such vulger language! Otherwise this cd is made up of his many other cd's, a great introduction to Big Sandy's brand of 50's style western swing and rockabilly. Fun music full of life and energy.
