Editorial Reviews

Milt Buckner was a roly-poly bundle of dynamite whose short legs couldn't quite reach his piano pedals, but his intensely animated bouncing while he played his solos and his great sense of humour won the hearts of all but the most petulant jazz critics. The versatile Buckner talent is here in spades on tunes like "Count's Basement", "One O'clock Jump", "The Late, Late Show" and "Jumpin' At The Woodside" showcasing Milt's one man ensemble organ style with a nod to Basie. Features two complete albums 'Rockin' With Milt' and 'Rockin' Hammond'. So here is music that really swings, music that exploits the full jazz potential of the Hammond organ, giving Milt Buckner a better than usual chance to demonstrate his extraordinary technical and creative skills at the Hammond.

A good percent of jazz fans, including organ jazz fans tend to overlook guys like Milt Buckner or Wild Bill Davis, who practically were the first artists to use this style of music typically played on a piano on an electric organ. Many just skip to the bop organists who used percussion like Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, and Groove Holmes. Before the B3 and percussion, jazz organists could create amazing bass lines that imitated actual basses as well as improvise scales and play along with trios or quartets. The only thing Jimmy changed was the sound of the organ by adding percussion and added a walking bass line. Milt was no exception, he was possibly one of the greatest organists of the 20th century, and even mentored young Jimmy Smith. Milt's style was close to that of big band pianists like Count Basie or Duke Ellington, and he would use the drawbars very freely, creating a louder and more prominent sound. Milt brought the organ into the light of the public, Jimmy is the one who popularized it in jazz. A lot of Milts songs still are just as good to listen to like Count's Basement which has a swing to it, and The Beast is used in the main theme of the video game Battlefield Bad Company. Milt switched between organ and piano in many of the songs to add more range. Milt was by far one of the most underrated organists of the century and his style is very distinguishable which helped build the groundwork for future jazz organists.

Just the fact that this recording contains the complete Rocking Hammond album is enough to buy it alone. Mighty Low sounds as good as ever, and The Beast just sounds superb. If you like Jazz this is the album for you. Milt Buckner is the master at the Hammond.

The last time I heard "Robbins Nest" by Milt Buckner was on a 45 RPM record when I was about 13 years old and this album has it with all its clear, crisp sound.
Another selection that got me moving was The Late, Late Show. I could not stand still while listening to it.
I am extremely satisfied with my purchase of this CD - clear, crisp sound with great selections.
Thank You!

I remember the sound produced from the 33 rpm "Hi-Fi" recording in the 1950s. This CD is a recording of a recording as was stated "remastered" on the cover. The only problem is me--not the CD. It was a joy to have found it'
