This review is from: Rockin With Rick (Audio CD)
I am a Rick Nelson fan. I watched him grow up on "Ozzie and Harriet" and looked each week to his musical numbers at the end of the show. That's why when I saw this CD I was excited but when I received it and on hearing it all my hopes were dashed. First of all, this is one of those dreaded "rerecordings" that all oldies lovers cringe at and hope never to get. I was deceived by the picture of a young Rick on the cover and assumed it would be original recordings but it is not. Secondly, the recordings sound awful. It sounds like they are literally recorded in someone's garage. The drums are too flat, the guitars all sound like a bad B movie background of the 50s. I know this was mostly done in England but this was bad. Rick sounds like he has ended a 3 month tour and was forced to do this album. It is him but a much older and very tired Rick, probably only a year or so before his untimely death and he sounds really tired.
The musical numbers are poorly done and makes you realize how really wonderful and talented James Burton was when he did lead guitar for Rick. There is even a highly questionable "live" set but even this sounds like it was a canned audience. All his hits are here "Traveling Man", "Hello Mary Lou", "Lonesome Town" but are done so poorly that it is only a pale imitation of the greatness and the smooth sound that Rick had in his youth. This was sad. If you are a oldies lover you can pass this one by and not miss anything.
