Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Angela Barrett's romantic cover art captures the mood of wonderment throughout Rocking Horse Land: And Other Classic Tales of Dolls and Toys, edited by Naomi Lewis. The six stories here include Hans Christian Andersen's "The Steadfast Tin Soldier," E. Nesbit's "The Town in the Library" and a Baba Yaga folktale; Barrett's Victorian-flavored illustrations conjure the imagined comforts of a cheerful British nursery. (Candlewick, $19.99 144p ages 8-12 ISBN 0-7636-0897-1; Nov.)

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-6-Lewis has gathered six classic stories, all with the theme of dolls and toys, and put them in this handsome collection. The tales, including Hans Christian Andersen's "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" and E. Nesbit's "The Town in the Library," have a timeless quality about them with appealing plots for children. What makes this book special, however, are the detailed illustrations peppered throughout the stories. Intricate pictures of doll houses, black-and-white silhouettes of toys, and full-page spreads of magical creatures all enhance the beauty of this anthology. To complete the work, Lewis has included an introduction to each selection, aimed at more adult enthusiasts of children's literature than at children themselves. While the old-fashioned appearance may limit readership, the book will appeal to a special audience and deserves shelf space in most collections.-Anne Knickerbocker, Cedar Brook Elementary School, Houston, TX

5.0 out of 5 stars a beautiful book for older children, November 20, 2002
This review is from: Rocking Horse Land and Other Classic Tales of Dolls and Toys (Hardcover)
This is a quite beautiful book made with high quality materials and containing many lovely color illustrations. The six stories included in this compilation are: The Memoirs of a London Doll by Mrs. Fairstar (1846), The Steadfast Tin Soldier by Hans Christian Anderson (1838), Ruth Ainsworth's Rag Bag, a Baba Yaga tale, Laurence Housman's Rocking Horse Land (1894), and The Town in the Library by E. Nesbit.

Each story is preceded by a paragraph of introduction about the author and the story, and the pictures by Angela Barrett are superb. These tales are a bit lengthy and too intense for young children, but just the thing for the more mature young reader. This would make a lovely and special gift.
