3.0 out of 5 stars Works well, but poor value
In my experience, these bench cookies do a good job of holding pieces in place, providing that the surface they're placed on is clean! Excessive sawdust and debris definitely make these more likely to slide around.

Unfortunately, the Bench Dog brand cookies also available on Amazon do the same thing but cost less.

Such a simple innovation, but well worth it. I haven't used it yet for routing edges, but I did work it to stabilize wood pieces for sanding. It worked really well with no clamping required and gave me access to the entire piece. I WAS surprised though at the postage charge. I bought these as part of a bigger Amazon order. Nowhere in the transaction was there an indication of what the postage from Rockler would be. It ended up being $6.95 or roughly 60% of the total purchase. For that, I should have gone to the store rather than purchase online...

5.0 out of 5 stars So Far, So Good, January 5, 2010
This review is from: Rockler Bench Cookie Work Grippers, 4-Pack (Tools & Home Improvement)
Its not often that I get to recommend something that's useful, effective AND cheap! So I wanted to make sure you all knew about Rockler's Bench Cookies. If you followed our AWFS 2009 coverage, you probably heard enough about these little puck-shaped doo-dads. For those who haven't, they are little "puck-shaped doo-dads" with a bit of soft gripping rubber on each side. The idea is to not only elevate your work off the bench for sanding and routing tasks (with no clamps), but to also stop the workpiece from sliding. Now we've had router mats for a long time now and I used to buy a similar material in big rolls at Costco. But I found that the rubbery material always left its pattern behind in the wood and it would take forever to sand it out again. But so far, I am not having that problem with the material on these little guys. And to answer your first question before you even ask it, dust doesn't ruin their gripping power. Just knock the excess dust off and you're good to go! I'll be anxious to see how they hold up after extensive use in the shop.

I agree with the gentleman who said he has yet to find a use for them. There is no way would I operate a power tool using these without clamping. They slide around unwanted; especially if they get the slightest sawdust on them.

Somebody mentioned they need a certain amount of weight on top (like a 4 by 8 sheet of plywood) to work properly. Perhaps they will work under those conditions, but that is certainly not the way they are marketed.

Work exactly as adversited. I use them to raise up wood when i'm routing it. My son likes to play with them when he's in the garage with me.

I guess you could make them out of hockey pucks glued to that grippey material, but the time it takes to do that would negate any money saved.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rockler Bench Cookies, September 6, 2010
This review is from: Rockler Bench Cookie Work Grippers, 4-Pack (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought four of these on sale. The price was good but I've not been able to find a way to put them to any worthwhile use. If you try to set a board on then and do some sanding, you simply can't! They dance all over the place and the board falls. Once one corner cookie is out-of-place, the whole setup is defunct. The soft rubber surfaces do grip slightly until they have saw dust on them, which, when sanding, takes only a few seconds, then all gripping ability is lost. You could possibly use them to lift a workpiece off of a work surface for some other purpose, but they would work no better than would a few scraps lumber.

Anyway, they are of no value when used for their suggested purpose. I can't imagine what those who have rated them highly could be thinking unless they have an agenda of some kind. I'll keep trying to find a good use for them. Maybe some day. . .

3.0 out of 5 stars Save Your Money, September 30, 2010

It works, but you can buy a hockey puck for 89 cents and glue a piece of shelf liner to the top and bottom to accomplish the same thing. It doesn't even have to be a hockey puck. A small scrap of wood with the same liner will work. You can build as many as you need and in any size you want.

Great idea. Reasonable execution but the soft pads tend to wear quickly. Also great for holding a laptop in place on the roof of a car while using an online service manual.

I ordered the product in the morning and the following day, they were at my doorstep. Great service from Rockler. The cookies themselves work exactly like they advertise. Used them numerous times when routing and no movement whatsoever of the boards I were routing. Will order 4 more for more supposrt on longer boards.

These Bench Cookies do a good job of elevating and securing your project for routing. I have also used them in lieu of the grip mat stuff you can get for sanding. The work well and seem very durable. Sawdust does not stick to them but you do have to knock them clean from time to time if you are working on multiple pieces one after the other.

There does seem to be a minimum weight for the friction to kick in really well. I have overcome this with a small metal disk shaped weight I use in lieu of a clamp at times. Moving the small weight to sand around or route near is quick and easy.
