This book shows tons of different kinds of rocks.

I will say this isn't a "kids" book, it's very informational and can be used by adults as well.

Most of the rock-and-mineral books I see are full of colorful pictures of exotic minerals, underground caves or far-away mountains. This is the first book I've come across that actually takes you to those places. The simple, clever mirror device pops those rocks right into your lap, or brings the mountain up close.
The information is accurate and well-written. Full color spreads illustrate the location or object and the photography is breathtaking. This is one you'll want to find space for, on that "oversized" book shelf, to accomodate the height of the book.

Beutiful pictures with detailed captions. It shows igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, and metamorphic rocks. It tells which rocks we use in our everyday life. Overall it is pretty good. I like the part were they tell the uses of flint.

The whole DK Eyewitness Books series represents a treasure for young readers. Whatever the subject, one gets a little background and context as well as subject-by-subject discussion, providing considerable depth of information for the younger reader.

The book begins with an introduction noting the age and nature of the planet Earth. Also in the brief opening section is a rendering of different types of rocks and minerals, such as gemstones, sedimentary rocks, seashore pebbles, and igneous rocks. This would be helpful for young readers to provide some basic vocabulary. There follow discussions of rock formations and weathering and erosion.

Then, a variety of rocks and minerals are explored. Later, the use of rocks and minerals is considered.

As always, a nice resource for young readers.

As with all DK books, this one offered beautiful illustrations of the various rocks and minerals. I bought this for my young grandson, and I liked the explanations of the basic differences between rocks, where they could be found, and how to pursue rock collection as a hobby, The book also included a CD and full color poster as added bonuses!

Great book, my 7 year old daughter is into rocks and minerals and this book has great descriptions and pictures for her to look at and learn about. I will say this isn't a "kids" book, it's very informational and can be used by adults as well. Probably not a starter book as well.
