1 hour down, 59 to go! The Rocksmith Challenge teaches you how to play guitar over a period of 60 days for just one hour a day, playing however you want: songs, chords, riffs, the Guitarcade or the new Session mode.
The new version of Rocksmith is cleaned up and polished nicely from last year's model. There are less intrusions from the narrator, and your next song or lesson is suggested in a more subtle manner, allowing the game to progress more organically than it did before. Plus, you can import all the songs from the first disc for $10 (after dropping $200 on the game, guitar and cable, this DOES feel kinda grabby.... but that's my only complaint). A Sesssion mode has been introduced in the 2014 game, allowing you to jam with a band that you create from scratch. You choose the style of instruments (electronic, classic, acoustic, metal and even synthesizers are represented in the selections), the scale, the tempo and the style of play (relaxed, pushed, blues, etc), and the virtual band will play along with you, changing style with how you play. While this can be a little overwhelming for beginners (I'm still a novice at best, myself), it does seem like a fantastic idea.
Now, on to the guitar. It's an Epiphone Les Paul Junior. Contrary to intuition, Junior does NOT mean that this is a 3/4 size guitar. It's a full size guitar, but smaller and lighter than the standard Les Paul, and only features a Volume and Tone knob. This means that its more accessible, and shouldn't cause too many problems for long play/learning sessions. The included Rocksmith strap is a nice bonus.
All in all, I am in love with this guitar and this game, and I can't wait to be able to play for real!

So I’ve had the Rocksmith 2014 guitar bundle edition for about 2 weeks now. I've always wanted to learn how to play but never had the time and didn’t want to spend money on lessons (heard they can get real expensive).
My first impressions were...let’s just say I couldn't put the guitar down. I played for about 3-4 hours the day I got it. The guitar was nice, better than expected. I was worried it wasn't going to be full size due to it saying "junior", but was pleasantly surprised that it seemed like a normal guitar (at least to me). It came with a strap, and 2 picks. The game does a great job at following your progress and helps you with the problems you’re having. At first you only play a handful of notes per song, but they gradually add notes depending on your progress. I noticed a few times where they added a note or group of notes that I just could not get down yet and they adjusted accordingly to my play style. After 2 weeks I look back and laugh that I was having trouble with that part of the song. Let’s hope 2 months from now I’ll look back and laugh at all the parts I’m messing up on now.
Despite my absolute love for this "game", it does have its problems. It likes to randomly freeze up on me every once in a while. It hasn't become a major consistent problem yet, more like a minor annoyance. Happens probably once a day. A few times I noticed I hit the wrong note and it registered that it was the correct one. And the tuner can be a bit finicky at times. That’s really it, nothing major.
This is a great way to learn how to play guitar, it has video lessens you can watch, a session mode that I’m sure by now you have heard all about.

I've dabbled with guitar, had lessons and played a little but was never very good and lost interest after learning only a few chords of a song. I've had the game one week. I'm now able to play 4 of the songs on the list. Not perfectly but it's such a great feeling to finally 'get' it. Reading tablature never did the song justice and was confusing. The way the music is presented is almost like streaming music right to your brain.

So can a 5 year old use the game?

I have a mini guitar that fits my 5 year old girl perfectly. Although the actual songs she can't do, the mini-games she can. She's already got muting down. Now she's working in getting her little fingers to get all the way to the E string. So cute to watch her try. I see her getting better if she keeps trying.

I'm already hooked on this tutor. Yes it is a music teacher. It's just presented in a way that is so freaking fun you forget you're practicing. I love the tracks and if you but the old version from Steam afterwards you can get an additional 50 songs.

I just bought the old version on sale for $15 and there is a licensing fee they call an 'import' tool so you can get those extra songs, that was $10. There is no importing you just buy the old version, the import tool and when you start your game they are downloaded and added automatically.

The downloadable content is great. Not a huge library but enough to keep you busy. You can buy the old rocksmith songs and they automatically work for 2014.

I can't tell you how much fun this game/tutor is. I mean it's just SOOOOO MUCH FUN!
