4.0 out of 5 stars Great improvement over the original but... October 23, 2013
Platform for Display:PC/Mac| Edition:Cable Included|Verified Purchase
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Rocksmith 2014 is a great upgrade to the original Rocksmith. However using the new version has caused me some good, bad and ugly! I purchased the original Rocksmith last November after purchasing a guitar. I played guitar a little bit in my teens and 20's but now that I'm in my late 30's I really wanted to learn to play versus just tinkering around. The original Rocksmith got me past the basics very quickly. I only learned and mastered a few songs but my friends and family were amazed and impressed how fast I picked things up. The original Rocksmith was great but the interface and game play was a little clunky and slow.

Fast forward to the new Rocksmith 2014 and we have a much faster and polished learning system. In 2014 gone is the mode of start at the bottom working to play at top venues and large crowds and scoring points. This reminded me much of a Guitar Hero style of play versus learning. While yes you still learned it seemed focus was more on scoring points then really learning the songs. I guess you could say both went hand in hand but I really want to learn the songs and I don't really care if a crowd is watching or scoring points so speak. While Rocksmith gave you the world tour gameplay, Rocksmith 2014 feels like the get it right in a studio gameplay.

Installation

I'm using the PC version as I did with the previous RS on an Asus i7 laptop with 16GB of Ram. I currently a 1TB hybrid ssd drive and a dedicated video card for graphics with 2GB of ram. As far installing the disks, that went rather smoothly. Steam was already installed however with RS2014 it also installs Uplay. Uplay from Ubisoft is supposed to give you stats on the game as well as leaderboards to see how you rank against other players online.

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
1) The only people who don't like this game are having issues with installing it. Or there's a conflict of some kind on their computer.
2) The overwhelming majority of people are able to install it without problems and get it up and running in no time.
3) The game is lightning fast. There is little to no delay or loading time between songs or exercises.
4) Session Mode ALONE is worth many times the price of purchase. It allows you to select from among dozens of different instruments to create a backing band and jam in any key and in any scale in any style of music. And it shows you the notes in that scale on the fretboard so you can learn the scale and work on your improvisation. Not only that, but the band REACTS to the way you play -- softer, louder, faster, etc. Not too long ago professional musicians paid thousands to set up backing track systems that weren't NEARLY this sophisticated.
5) There are 55 or so songs from multiple genres to play, plus hundreds of downloadable tracks.
6) There are several mini-games that teach guitar skills for those starting out and for those who are rusty. Back in the day, you had to practice alternate picking/chords/bending/scales etc. by rote.
7) The game has a Riff Repeater where you can take sections (or the whole song) and slow them down and practice it until you have it down.
8) You and a friend can play along with the songs or with Session Mode at the same time: Guitar/guitar, bass/bass, guitar/bass.
9) There are lessons with video demonstrations and practice sessions for most guitar techniques. Even tapping!!!

If you, or anyone you know, are at all interested in playing guitar or bass, this is, by far, the best $80 you will ever spend.

ps Some people have problems with note recognition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the nicest ride on the lot... October 27, 2013
By DTtocs
Platform for Display:PC/Mac| Edition:Cable Included|Verified Purchase
I should begin by pointing out that this review is PC specific; I can't speak to how well the product performs on gaming consoles. Often times taken for granted, one thing most of us enjoy about front-end, consumer-grade software products (like games and productivity suites) is simplicity. On clients like Steam, for example, you buy the game, click install, let it work itself through download, click play - and off you go on a new adventure. Rarely if at all (unless modding) does the player need to worry about tweaking or changing values. You hit play - and the game plays - simple.

Not so with Rocksmith 2014. The install was simple enough; just drop in the disc and follow the prompts. Okay, done. During the process, the installer associated the game to my Steam account, and also downloaded UPlay, a required client component. Once the UPlay registration was complete, it was time to plug in the guitar and launch the game. ugghhhh.....

It crashed on the first attempt. On try number two, it launch and locked, prompting a forced shut down/reboot. On the third try, it made it through launch but with horribly distorted audio and significant lag (it sounded like a 78rpm record playing on a 33rpm turntable). The options menu offered no settings adjustments that addressed the issue. The "troubleshooting" guide was equally uninformative. I then opened the game files and found a pdf document that covered OS audio engine setup and made all the necessary audio playback and recording settings changes. Still no improvement - okay - off to read forums...

Upon reading various threads, I proceeded to open the games .ini config file in admin edit and changed the win32 latency output to a 0 value.
