As others have stated, the issue with the game failing to patch is real - and it's impossible to run the game without getting the patch installed. Thankfully there is a fix for this that has worked for me. Credit goes to GamingKnight over on the cheap@ssgamer dot com forums:
"Are you getting the error "Error binary patching file FileName LANLauncher.exe" when the 2nd patch is running? The fix was pretty asinine. I had to reinstall it to C:\Program Files\RockstarGames\L.A.Noire (notice that RockstarGames had to become one word; no spaces) as opposed to the default of C:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\L.A. Noire" I can verify that I had the same issue others are complaining about here, and this fix did work. I had to unsinstall the game completely from the original default directory, then re-download and install the game to the suggested directory above. Also please note, if you need to download the game again from Amazon, you cannot use the same L_A_Noire_Downloader.exe from your original purchase. Apparently Amazon's download exe's are one-time use only, so you need to go into your Amazon software library and download another .exe launcher. It is pretty poor quality control for Rockstar to release the digital download with such a common and game-breaking issue. Amazon should also take some responsibility here given the number of customers this has impacted. To be fair, I did contact Amazon and they are now aware of the issue, and even offered me a refund (which I have declined now that the game is working for me). I hope this helps some of you who are going through the same frustration! 24 of 28 people found the following review helpful

So this game installs just fine but will not start when I launch it. Am running Windows 7 and have a good rig. Did a quick search to see if there was an easy fix and no there is not, at least yet. So why am I writing this review? Well I have to complain somewhere.
Why is it that in my classes (I am a college student) if I turn in a blank piece of paper for my final I do not get a good grade? Now how is it that real people, making real salaries, at real businesses can release a program, making money, to potentially thousands of people that does not run? This isn't like complex beta testing here. It is as simple as "oh my gosh, Frank, our game doesn't launch on a windows 7 platform, maybe we should look into that." And then Frank in response, "Well, I don't know, maybe we'll patch it later to start, I mean how many people actually use Windows 7? Let's not get carried away." 11 of 12 people found the following review helpful

I assume the price has dropped so drastically because of the issues people are having getting the game to run. Here's what I did to get it to work:
1) Go into the directory c:\program files\Rockstar games\La Noire. Delete all the PATCHED FILES. (These are from your failed first attempt to patch.) 2) In your game folder there is an application that says Patch and it has a bunch of numbers after it. BEFORE YOU CLICK ON THIS FILE MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE RUNNING THE PATCH APPLICATION AS THE ADMINISTRATOR. To do this right-click on the icon, go to the properties tab and check the "run as administrator" box. (It took me ages to figure this out, because I only changed the application that launches the game to run as administrator.) Make sure you're running the game file as the administrator as well. You might need to uninstall and reinstall the game. If you need to re-install the game, don't launch it until after you click on the patch file. Okay, my review: This game is absolutely amazing. The attention to detail is amazing, you can literally just cruise the 1940s Los Angeles streets for hours and not get bored because they created an entire world. They must have looked at actual photographs of the streets of LA around that time. Think Grand Theft Auto in a 1940's time warp. If you happen to find the arcade sequences hard, they give you an option to skip after failing a couple of times. If you are getting tired of driving, they eventually offer you an option to have your partner drive and cut that part of the gameplay out. The story is intriguing and fun. The voice acting is GREAT and the facial technology is top notch. It's absolutely worth the thirty dollars I paid for it before the price took a sudden nosedive. I am beyond impressed with this game. A solid game, but not exactly GOTY material
I'm typically a fan of more RPG, open-world types of games, so I put of trying this game until I was able to get it at a heavy discount, and overall I was pleasantly surprised. Read more
