NOT ORIGINAL ROCKSTEADY!, September 20, 2003
This review is from: Rocksteady Massive (Audio CD)
Warning! Do not be misled. Although this album is called rocksteady massive, features photos on the cover from mid sixties time period and features a sticker on the covr that says "The Greatest Hits! ORiginal Recordings!," The music for the most part the are bunny lee produced recuts of the original tunes wilson made for studio one , and even (stick by me) lee himself. Many of the original rocksteady tunes, in their classic and most famous form can be found on the heartbeat cd " best of whichare licensed from the owner of studio one, coxsone dodd, and taken from his orignal masters.
Delroy wilson is one of the greatest Jamaican artists, and as with any artist who recorded so many classic foundation tunes, they get endlessly covered by other artists and re-recorded by the oriiginal artist himself. For every rythymic shift or new reggae style there will be new versions of Delroy's classics. The bunny lee versions are good, and if you prefer that 70's flying symbol sound i reccomend this.
But I was left dissapointed, angry and frustrated becuase i thought i found a great collection of rocksteady classics and was duped in to buying something else. We deserve better and Delroy deserves better.
Heart Beat records, Soul Jazz Records, and Studio One/coxsone dodd, all release studio one from the masters. Stick with them if you want the originals.
