1.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, August 10, 2003

A DVD more about the making of the videos, minus the complete videos. Lousy audio. I guess I can use it as a gag gift for Christmas.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Cheesy, August 6, 2003

Ghost of Metal Past (Circle Pines, MN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rockthology Presents Hard 'N Heavy, Vol. 2 (DVD)
I bought it because I am a fan of Priest, Malmsteen and Dio and thought I would get some of the videos that MTV used to play. Tough luck! The videos are constantly interrupted by interview segments. The interviews are annoying to because they are not serious interviews but puff pieces conducted to give viewers an "insider" view of the stars' lifestyle. Do I really care about Dio's pool table? Not quite.

The video is really dated, too, which makes it unintentionally funny. One of the video segments for Doro was shot on some rocks by the ocean and there is a shot of this guy who looks exactly like Fabio playing a bass standing on the rocks (without a shirt of course) in the middle of nowhere. It's kind of like hair metal meets the Harlequin romance novel.

Then there is Malmsteen's band doing its best Warrant impression. One of the best guitar players in the world sinking to the level of Cherry Pie.

On the good side. Lita Ford was always a looker who could belt out a good tune and is in fine form here. But once again, the chopped up video editing style doesn't do her justice.

Some of the interviews revealed some interesting information that I didn't know before but for the most part they are way short on substance.

When this was originally filmed (the video doesn't say but it is obviously 89-90) hair metal posturing was pounding the final nails into the coffin of mainstream metal. Some people blame grunge but Rockthology proves we have no one to blame but ourselves.
