I bought this unit brand new, on clearance, at nearly 70% off my local hardware store. I had not seen a cordless oscillating tool before, but had heard good things about the Rockwell Sonicrafter corded model. I wasn't sure what to expect and was honestly a bit concerned about the battery size and deep discount.

My concerns about the price were gone after I tried the unit. After a few weeks of staring at this new tool on my work bench, I was finally able to use it for some detailed cutouts on my home's 3 entrance doors for installing some security locks and wrap around plates. BTW: These wrap around plates have to fit perfectly snug, or they will wobble and the door won't close properly so was looking forward to the Sonicrafter's precision cutting abilities which did not disappoint.

About the battery life:
I got about 10 minutes at the highest speed per battery which is probably the max of what anyone should use this tool for on one continuous cut. I made sure to let the tool do the work and tried not apply too much pressure. With these tools, very long cuts risk wearing out the cutting bits early due to overheating and these blades are not cheap.

About the attachments:
Some folks have reported attachments coming loose and this was not the case for me. I applied firm pressure to attach the bits when seating the hex locking screw, but not too much to break anything. Nothing came loose after going through three battery charges and 10 blade changes.

About the front light:
The light position seems well thought out until you realize many useful cutting positions are at angles where the light is not able to shine. The light should sweep around the whole front of the unit instead of just being a small beam forward.

Well the tool itself is great. Well built. Storng construction houseing. The light is actually handy to have. At first i thought it was jsut one of those things companies add in that break in a week. not so. you'll love this tool to death. well worth the money. It will cut drywall for quite awhile before dying and cuts good to. however heres the not so good. i can't find batteries anywhere. i work in areas with no power so i need a battery that last or multiple batteries. one battery can cut through about 4or5 1x4's and thats it for wood. not too impressive. the infomericials always show it cutting nails. bull. the nail must be made of a soft metal or you just spent $15 cutting a nail cause the balde is ruined. a little dificult to tell if the nail is soft or not when in the wood. so dont think your going slicing through nails. still at $150 or less it worth the things that can be done with this thing.

I had a tiling project to do and wanted to use the Rockwell SonicCrafter to help. It was helpful and did the job I needed it to do, but I wasn't blown away with it. In fact, I had to use my Dremel in conjunction with the SonicCrafter - the Dremel battery lasted much longer and it could do almost as much. But I have used the SonicCrafter for other projects around the house as well and it has proven to be a very handy tool to have. I did have to call and send my two batteries back when they both wore completely out after my tiling project - but Rockwell was great to send me two new batteries without charge. All in all, for the average handy man at home, the SonicCrafter is a useful tool and I'm glad I have it.

i have to begin by stating that i got mine lightly used off craigslist for $75 bucks. i am happy with it for that price, but would be a little disappointed with it if i payed the full price for it, and that's where my 3 stars comes from.
however it comes with a lot of the blades and accessories which is nice, in fact if you bought the harbor freight cordless oscillating tool and then as many blades as this comes with, it would end up costing a bit over what this one costs, and this performs much better than the HF one, i bought one and returned it.

the tool its self is pretty useful, i have primarily used it for the removal of undercoating on cars i am restoring, it makes that horrid job a whole lot less horrid, and the led is nice for that job as well as i do not have the fortune of working with a rotisserie, and just have the cars up on jack stands. it saves me dragging a warm light under there, i like the undercoating as cold as possible, then it just chips off once you get it thin enough.

battery performance is good, with me using it constantly and pushing on it hard the whole time it last about 30-40 minutes, which is usually exactly what the bats charge in, so having the 2 and rotating is nice.

for my uses a corded one would probably work better, but i wanted a portable one in case i wanted to take to pic n pull and so on to cut patch panels.
it actually does a fairly decent job of cutting through sheet metal with the blade it comes with. the blade seems to hold up decently, i used it to cut older volvo sheet metal and it exceeded my expectations, but they were not all that high :)
as a note, in my experience volvo sheetmetal (volvo 240 in this case) eats cut off wheels, sanding pads, and so on faster than everything else i have worked with.
