5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Visual Wrap on the Rocky Series

2.0 out of 5 stars Why buy this if you have the movies?
The book is loaded with pictures but they are the same ones we have seen over the years. Not much behind the scenes pics. No reason to spend money on this if you have the movies on dvd.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Visual Wrap on the Rocky Series, December 31, 2006
This review is from: Rocky: The Ultimate Guide (Hardcover)
This book was given to my son for Christmas, so I had a chance to look it over, and I was very favorably impressed. My teenaged son is absolutely "nuts" over it and read it cover to cover. He thought it was his best Christmas present.

The book chronicles all 6 Rocky movies in great detail, with extra tidbits of information that make the book more interesting. The photos are great, large format, both color and B/W, making it enjoyable, both visually and for its literary value.

The book evidently came out to coincide with the release of "Rocky Balboa", thus it was written and produced before the actual movie was released. This resulted in limited and sometimes inaccurate information in this section of the book. This is my only criticism of the book. Otherwise, it is terrific and provides complete coverage for each Rocky movie.

It makes a terrific present for anyone who likes the Rocky movies. Makes good bathroom reading too for the porcelain chair readers in your life!

4.0 out of 5 stars Collector's Item but Many Glaring Errors, December 21, 2006
By

I was pleased to purchase this scrapbook (of sorts) but was hoping for more about the behind-the-scenes and more information about how and why the movies were done the way they were. Anyone who's seen the Rocky movies can live without reading about them chronologically.

More importantly, the book has many typos and punctuation errors, most of which are in the section for the new Rocky Balboa movie. The book says Rocky decided to use part of Adrian's life "assurance" to create a restaurant, then the book calls the restaurant "Rocky's" and uses that as the header for the section on the restaurant as well.

This book is a nice thing to have and I am pleased with it overall, but was expecting more depth on the actual production and was certainly expecting a grammatically / factually correct book.

If the author ever revises this to correct mistakes, send me a free one for pointing it out!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, January 6, 2008
This review is from: Rocky: The Ultimate Guide (Hardcover)
The pictures and look of the book were great but I was disappointed. The book was pretty much a summary of each film. Other reviews and the description lead me to believe it had cool insider tidbits and little known facts. I ended up returning it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice coffee table book, but imperfect and unimpressive, January 12, 2007
This review is from: Rocky: The Ultimate Guide (Hardcover)
Someone was bound to do a visual "Rocky" collection like this, and it's nice to finally have one. That being said, Ultimate Rocky isn't all that impressive. Most of the photos, like 98%, look like screen captures from the films, or even DVD versions of the films, as there is visible pixel distortion in some of them. Also, some of the other reviewers noted the many "glaring errors." This is true. While it may have been too late to update the book for "Rocky Balboa," some of the errors are grammatical and shouldn't have happened anyway. For example, the book mentions that Rocky used Adrian's "life assurance" funds to help start his restaurant. Now, anyone who saw the film knows this isn't true, because the restaurant was established in 1995 (it's on the sign) and Adrian died in 2002. So she was alive for seven years after it opened. Plus, even if she HAD died before and Rocky used the money to start it, the funds are called life "insurance" benefits--not "assurance." That's just dumb. And it says the author is a journalist some place. Yeah, way to edit your own book. This book is okay for kid fans of Rocky, but otherwise you can live without it. You could print most of these images at home, and probably in better quality, and you'd probably get the facts down more accurately, too, if you're as big a fan as I am. Oh, not to mention that this book arrived with the corners badly bent.

Rocky: The Ultimate Guide is a winner. Beginning with the Foreward by Sylvester Stallone to the stories on each of the Rocky films, including the latest, "Rocky Balboa", this is a must for any fan. The behind the scenes photography and information from the movies add to enjoyment of the book. Go for it!
