Editorial Reviews

Two exciting Studio One dramas written by Rod Serling. The Arena: A newly elected Senator must decide if he wants to follow the course charted by his father, a former Senator, or chart a course of his own. The Strike: During the Korean War, Major Gaylord’s will is tested when he is forced to issue an order that will result in the death of twenty of his men.

Rod Serling had his own private world of enigmas. Battlefields. Senate floor. Crises of conscience. Men at the top. No way to go back. Early Rod Serling and his words are literate and sharply honed. A perfect cast, direction, and small sets, seen, and upon a time, seen on, and perfect DVD quality make this disc cause for tribute. You forget the years. You even look at the advertising respectfully, because it's Rod's work you're seeing in between them. Rod was young then. He was not to get much older. A play about the senate. A play about war. Dialogue that goes to the bone. Close ups on faces of actors who were giants, forming words of Rod's. Not one mistake. Not one. These teleplays are as serious as they come. If you know Rod only from The Twilight Zone, and how brilliant that was, try his other works. Prepare again to meet the finest writer you ever have. He'll break your heart and your bones. And you'll be damn sorry you can't tell him thank you.

I'd never heard of the TV show Studio One until I happened upon them on Amazon. I bought one and was immediately a fan! I am buying the entire set and I'm almost there. These are interesting stories cast with top actors and the black and white photography adds to the mystic. If you are going to watch TV, watch something worth your time! These are a deal time-wise and money-wise at Amazon! I've purchased a lot of DVD's from Amazon and they package them very well so they survive the worst shipping experiences with no damage at all!

I love Rod Serling's works, and can't get enough. I only wish I could find more on DVD. These are two wonderful plays written for TV. If you like Serling, get this DVD.

Two excellent dramas of the sort Rod Serling is well known for. Stories like these are what made Serling the best Television writer of his generation and one of the best of all time. Video quality is pretty decent for old kinescopes (the only way they had of recording live video shows at the time). Includes the original Westinghouse live appliance commercials as well. Each show clocks in at over 58 minutes, so about the only thing that could be missing from the original 60 minute broadcasts is a station bumper.
