Editorial Reviews

Two exciting Studio One dramas written by Rod Serling. The Arena: A newly elected Senator must decide if he wants to follow the course charted by his father, a former Senator, or chart a course of his own. The Strike: During the Korean War, Major Gaylord’s will is tested when he is forced to issue an order that will result in the death of twenty of his men.

This review is from: Rod Serling - Studio One Dramas (DVD)
Rod Serling had his own private world of enigmas. Battlefields. Senate floor. Crises of conscience. Men at the top. No way to go back. Early Rod Serling and his words are literate and sharply honed. A perfect cast, direction, and small sets, seen, and upon a time, seen on, and perfect DVD quality make this disc cause for tribute. You forget the years. You even look at the advertising respectfully, because it's Rod's work you're seeing in between them. Rod was young then. He was not to get much older. A play about the senate. A play about war. Dialogue that goes to the bone. Close ups on faces of actors who were giants, forming words of Rod's. Not one mistake. Not one. These teleplays are as serious as they come. If you know Rod only from The Twilight Zone, and how brilliant that was, try his other works. Prepare again to meet the finest writer you ever have. He'll break your heart and your bones. And you'll be damn sorry you can't tell him thank you.
