5.0 out of 5 stars Why I love Capoeira, June 14, 2007
By
This review is from: Rodas de Capoeira-D (DVD)

I really like this DVD. It shows many Capoeira rodas (and one salsa roda, which I personally don't care for). Different playing styles are represented: relatively aggressive play, harmonic play, or "show-off" play, which can also be sort of a dialogue. I looked at it and was inspired, it gave me a sense of where I am trying to get. In addition, it was interesting to try and follow how well experienced players maintain proper technique during actual play.

But there is more to it. For someone who is interested in human nature, looking at Capoeira rodas gives some food for thought. I was looking and thinking - is Capoeira a "systemizing" thing, an "empathizing" thing, is there is "male" play and "female" play? It also made me think of conflict creation and resolution. Another aspect to contemplate on is what's in it for the players: Fun? Excitement? A way of building ranking order? Trying to impress potential mates? Also, as someone who is interested in exercise physiology, looking at those amazing performance made me contemplate on what does it take to develop such abilities - physical and mental? Is Capoeria something everyone can master or does it takes a certain body type? Are there tricks to get to be able to do all that? Are there tricks to avoid injuries?

So I'm glad to have this DVD, both "Capoiera - wise" and "extra - Capoeira" wise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another good dvd on capoeira rodas, February 9, 2006
This review is from: Rodas de Capoeira-D (DVD)
This DVD is in a PAL format which is more common is Western Europe and parts of north Africa. The DVDs in the U.S. are NTSC formatted. What this means is it may not play on your DVD. Older DVD players may not play PAL format but most new and inexpensive DVD players and computers (Mac or PC) with DVD players can. So check your DVD players guide before purchasing. If you have an old DVD player that does not play PAL and would like to enjoy these DVDs do yourself a favor and buy a new and inexpensive DVD player. I bought a phillip for $30 at Best Buy that plays these DVDs.

In my review I will assume that the person who is interested in what the video is about will already have some capoeira background on the names of some of the movements and other aspects of capoeira. My intent is not on teaching or explaining capoeira but to cover what is in this video.

If you are looking for a DVD to watch rodas then `Rodas de Capoeira' is the DVD. The DVD shows about four or five rodas in different cities in France. The capoeira group on this DVD is Capoeira Brasil. `Rodas de Capoeira' is one of the five capoeira DVDs produced and directed by Christophe Diez. This DVD is also part of a box set that also contains `Basic Techniques of Capoeira' and `100% Regional.' As on all Diez DVDs the camera work and editing is well done. The roda is videoed from several angles and edit so the play of the roda flows continuously and smoothly as if you were watching a live football game. The DVD follows each roda for about 10 to 15 minutes. The first Roda takes place in a gymnasium. Then another roda at park by the beach followed by a segment of a samba de roda, which shares its roots with capoeira. The samba de roda is fun to watch as each guy tries to out do each other when dancing with the female at the center. Samba de roda has always been a more humorous and fun activity. The next roda seems to take place on a big theater stage. There are some 50 plus capoeiristas partaking in the roda. In this roda some serious rasteiras, headbutts and tesouras take place showing the actual fighting sense of capoeira. The other rodas show the game with out knocking the opponent down. The last roda is more of a show showing some good acrobatic moves. The roda does speed up, meaning the music picks up the pace and then the play picks up. It is very impressive.

The DVD also has a bonus section with interviews of four members from the group Capoeira Brasil. The interviews are interesting and are translated into English, Spanish, French and German. There is also a segment on Maculelê, another afro-brazilian art dance that has some fighting techniques with sticks but really more of a dance.

The DVD `Rodas de Capoeira' lives up to its title. I would recommend this DVD to anyone interested in watching rodas and seeing how a roda is played out. There are no instructions or illustrations on the basic movements of capoeira on this DVD just rodas. Other DVDs by the same director Diez for rodas are `100% Regional' and `Capoeira 100% Spectacular.' If you are looking for a good DVD on step by step instructions then I would recomment `100% Capoeira," and `Basic Techniques of Capoeira' both by Diez as well.
