Rode NTG3 Condenser Shotgun Microphone with Storage Cylinder

The RØDE NTG3 super-cardioid shotgun microphone is designed for professional use on film, television, electronic news gathering and wherever high-resolution broadcast audio is required.

As RØDE's premier directional microphone the NTG3 exhibits superlative audio quality with a rich, warm quality and a full frequency response. Its RF bias technology makes it almost completely resistant to moisture, making it the only option when recording in demanding environments where condensation is an issue.

Machined from solid brass and available in either anti-glare, nickel-plated finish or matte black (NTG3B), the NTG3 is incredibly robust while remaining light weight. Its precise yet forgiving polar pattern ensures that whether used on-camera or on a boom pole, the NTG3 will capture audio clearly every time.

A durable aluminum storage cylinder is supplied to provide the ultimate protection for the NTG3 while in storage and transport. Tightly sealed at both ends the cylinder is highly weatherproof, adding to the microphone's rugged performance credentials.

Construction quality is phenomenal.

The RODE NTG-3 is a much hotter mic with greater sensitivity without any question than the Sennheiser MKH-416.

The aluminum case is way cool, too.

I bought this NTG3 because I do a lot of photo/video shoots. I had shopped around and after a colleague of mine strongly recommended this one, I checked it out. It is simply a fantastic mic and exactly what I was looking for. My recording really covered the full freq. spectrum, which I really need for what I do. The quality was astounding and from what I read on their website...it's even weather proof! That will definitely, definitely come in handy for me as I've had a few run-ins with that in the past.

The ONLY drawback of my purchase was buying it through Brooklyn Professional Audio!!! I purchased it because they were the cheapest, which seemed like a good idea at the time. The unfortunate thing is they are NOT...repeat...NOT an authorized dealer. Therefore, when I tried to register my mic for it's warranty...Rode kindly told me that it wasn't possible since Brooklyn Professional Audio is not an authorized reseller. No fault to Rode at all...I don't blame them! All this to say...do NOT purchase from Brooklyn Professional Audio this product or any other one as far as I'm concerned.

Other than that, I am sooooo pleased with this purchase. I was tempted to return it...but the thing is built like a tank. I don't expect any issues anytime soon. Highly recommend!!!

I got the NTG3 for a Canon XF100 I use for my YouTube channel and it's easily one of the best microphones I've ever used. Period.

Audio recording quality is fantastic. There's literally zero static that comes from this thing, which you unfortunately get from cheaper shotgun mics. If you've ever used a decent condenser microphone, you'll know that you get that nice, deep, smooth audio. That's what you get with the NTG3. The sound is so nice you can literally even use this microphone as an interview or podcasting microphone. It's very versatile. Directionality is great as well. When used at a public place it does a great job reducing background audio, which is super useful if you cover events and a handheld microphone is a no go.

Construction quality is phenomenal. The entire unit is made of metal and feels like it'd last a lifetime if properly taken care of. It also comes with a felt lined carrier case as well as a metal tube case if you're doing a lot of traveling where the microphone may get damaged.

The only drawback IMO is that it lacks a shockmount. For $700 you'd expect RODE to include their SM3 or something, but no. You don't get one. Then again, the type of people who buy this probably already have a couple shockmounts...

I initally purchased the NTG-2 and did an audio test with a friend who owns the NTG-3. We set up both mics on a boom and recorded to Tascams. Did everything as close as possible including having the same length of cables. The gain was so much better on the NTG-3 that I decided to return the NTG-2 and pay almost 3 times as much for the NTG-3. The aluminum case is way cool, too. The back rejection of this mic is pretty amazing. It almost totally eliminated the ice cream truck down the street. Good thing because I was getting ready to shoot the dude. So, this mic is pretty good at eliminating violence, too.

This mic has excellent characteristics; Low Self Noise, nice off axis response, and excellent tonal quality.
I plan on using mine out doors in the field for mostly nature recordings.
So far during testing, this seems to be great mic for the job and price point.

Looking forward to a year of recordings.

So, excluding sound (which is subjective of course), HOW is the Rode NTG-3 superior to the Sennheiser MKH-416?

The RODE NTG-3 is a much hotter mic with greater sensitivity without any question than the Sennheiser MKH-416. What this means is low pre-amp cranking of gain to get the distant sounds, likewise this makes the NTG-3 the superior choice for field recording.

Compared to the Sennheiser MKH-416, the build quality is unquestionably superior (yes, the Australians beat the Germans in this dept!). Mfg. in Australia, and comes with a CNC machined aluminum tube for protection, the RODE NTG-3, other than sound (being subjective) is a superior mic than the Sennheiser MKH-416

Its build tougher
its MORE sensitive than the Sennheiser MKH-416, meaning less pre-amp
lower self-noise than the Sennheiser MKH-416
More realistic (to me and others) sound, . The Sennheiser MKH-416 comes off as very flat and airy sounding.

Money being irrelevant, get the Rode NTG-3

I have the RODE NTG-2 , two of them in fact, there is likewise no comparison whatsoever between the two. For $300 more (used like new cost), the NTG-3 is a must get. More true sound, more authentic, far superior build quality, far more robust construction. Importantly a much more sensitive mic!

Specifically many have commented that the Sennheiser MKH-416 is flat with a flat synthetic sound, I agree.

I've been using this microphone for on-location sound for film and video for over 5 years. It sounds phenomenal and performs fantastically! On most set-ups and shoots I often use a combination of audio recording devices to ensure I am covering all my bases when it comes to dialogue and on-location sound. However, in almost every case this microphone outperforms all others. Combining it with the Rode blimp gives excellent results in outdoor and high-wind scenarios, and I have yet to experience a shoot where this microphone fails to perform. If you are serious about your on-location sound for your film or video productions, this is the mic or you!
