Rode NTG3 Condenser Shotgun Microphone with Storage Cylinder

The RØDE NTG3 super-cardioid shotgun microphone is designed for professional use on film, television, electronic news gathering and wherever high-resolution broadcast audio is required.

As RØDE's premier directional microphone the NTG3 exhibits superlative audio quality with a rich, warm quality and a full frequency response. Its RF bias technology makes it almost completely resistant to moisture, making it the only option when recording in demanding environments where condensation is an issue.

Machined from solid brass and available in either anti-glare, nickel-plated finish or matte black (NTG3B), the NTG3 is incredibly robust while remaining light weight. Its precise yet forgiving polar pattern ensures that whether used on-camera or on a boom pole, the NTG3 will capture audio clearly every time.

A durable aluminum storage cylinder is supplied to provide the ultimate protection for the NTG3 while in storage and transport. Tightly sealed at both ends the cylinder is highly weatherproof, adding to the microphone's rugged performance credentials.

I initally purchased the NTG-2 and did an audio test with a friend who owns the NTG-3. We set up both mics on a boom and recorded to Tascams. Did everything as close as possible including having the same length of cables. The gain was so much better on the NTG-3 that I decided to return the NTG-2 and pay almost 3 times as much for the NTG-3. The aluminum case is way cool, too. The back rejection of this mic is pretty amazing. It almost totally eliminated the ice cream truck down the street. Good thing because I was getting ready to shoot the dude. So, this mic is pretty good at eliminating violence, too.

So, excluding sound (which is subjective of course), HOW is the Rode NTG-3 superior to the Sennheiser MKH-416?

The RODE NTG-3 is a much hotter mic with greater sensitivity without any question than the Sennheiser MKH-416. What this means is low pre-amp cranking of gain to get the distant sounds, likewise this makes the NTG-3 the superior choice for field recording.

Compared to the Sennheiser MKH-416, the build quality is unquestionably superior (yes, the Australians beat the Germans in this dept!). Mfg. in Australia, and comes with a CNC machined aluminum tube for protection, the RODE NTG-3, other than sound (being subjective) is a superior mic than the Sennheiser MKH-416

Its build tougher
its MORE sensitive than the Sennheiser MKH-416, meaning less pre-amp
lower self-noise than the Sennheiser MKH-416
More realistic (to me and others) sound, . The Sennheiser MKH-416 comes off as very flat and airy sounding.

Money being irrelevant, get the Rode NTG-3

I have the RODE NTG-2 , two of them in fact, there is likewise no comparison whatsoever between the two. For $300 more (used like new cost), the NTG-3 is a must get. More true sound, more authentic, far superior build quality, far more robust construction. Importantly a much more sensitive mic!

Specifically many have commented that the Sennheiser MKH-416 is flat with a flat synthetic sound, I agree.

My friend owns the NTG 3 and raves about it. However, I was not in a position to spend $700 on a microphone, so encouraged by the positive reviews, I purchased the NTG 2 "used in like new condition" for $215. Overall I am satisfied with the performance of the NTG 2 and used it successfully for an indoor interview in a noisy environment.

I decided to run a test comparison of the NTG 2 and my friend's NTG 3 under identical conditions. The 2 microphones were mounted side by side to fixed booms and ran identical length XLR cables to a DR-40 digital recorder. The recorder picked up the NTG 2 on the left stereo channel and the NTG 3 on the right stereo channel. I then separated the channels in Premier Pro CC and processed them so that each sample provided a signal to both ears. No other processing was done to the signals. The most noticeable difference between the mics is in gain. The NTG 3 had about 20dB more gain the the NTG-2. However, after raising the gain for the NTG 2 and lowering for the NTG 3 in Premier Pro CC, the 2 misc sound about equal to me.

The test is rendered as a lossless AIFF file. A single beep precedes the NTG2 recording and a double beep precedes the NTG 3 recording. 2nd half of the test takes about a 3 second segment and alternates several times between the two mics. Again, the only thing that has been processed is the gain to neutralize the gain difference between the mics.

The sample file can be found at 220v.co/NTG2.

I've been using this microphone for on-location sound for film and video for over 5 years. It sounds phenomenal and performs fantastically! On most set-ups and shoots I often use a combination of audio recording devices to ensure I am covering all my bases when it comes to dialogue and on-location sound. However, in almost every case this microphone outperforms all others. Combining it with the Rode blimp gives excellent results in outdoor and high-wind scenarios, and I have yet to experience a shoot where this microphone fails to perform. If you are serious about your on-location sound for your film or video productions, this is the mic or you!

Really good mic, but get the dead cat and a shock mount.

You will still need to do noise erasure in post production. This mic is good at picking up the right person, but you will still get hiss even in a quiet room.... way worse if you forget to turn off the refrigerator. But for the price, it works wonders, I am constantly complimented on the sound in my films.

I am very happy with this microphone. I'm just getting into DSLR video recording and was hesitant to spend a lot of money on another mic (I have the RODE VideoMic) but needed better sound for voice overs. This mic is doing a great job, sound is clean and there are very few moving parts, so it's easy to use.

Awesome product but I found out after I bought it that it's going to be a little quiet on my recorder which is the DR-40. Still an amazing microphone and I expect to have it for a very long time.

Great mic for the money. I have been using this for the past year in my film production classes and It gives really good broadcast quality audio and can be used foley. If your in search of better sound and don't have thousands of dollars this is the way to go. Pair it with a zoom h5. Also for those wondering. the NTG1 and NTG2 are really the same mic. The 2 is longer only because it has a spot for a battery so you are able to use the mic without needing phantom power.
