Book Description

Ulverscroft Mystery January 2008
Harry Banner turned up in London one November evening. He had just got back from Venezuela and he wanted to see Robert Cade. He'd known Cade six years earlier in Buenos Aires and now Banner wanted a small favour, just to keep a parcel until he called back for it. The trouble was that Banner never did call back, because the next morning he was found dead in his hotel room with a stab wound to the chest. Other people came looking for the parcel at his flat, but by that time Cade had decided a trip to Venezuela might throw some light on the reasons for Harry's murder. However, in San Borja, the climate could be very unhealthy for someone who went round asking too many questions.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Usual Pattinson Style but Not His Best Work!, August 30, 2007
By
James N Simpson (Gold Coast, QLD Australia) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This review is from: The Rodriguez Affair (Hardcover)
James Pattinson writes in an old man style where his characters use words that show Pattinson is obviously from a previous generation and not quite down with the lingo of today, but this style does add something unique and enjoyable to his novels as well as fits in well with novels set in a former era such as the Rodriguez Affair. This book written in 1970 was a little bit more predictable, as well the plot was a bit too convenient in places to be up there with his best work. However like all of his work it was still a great way to pass the time and fans of his style won't be disappointed with what they've got.

The plot of the Rodriguez Affair revolves around Robert Cade (who is pretty much like most Pattinson novel main male characters). Cade now living in London used to be a journalist in South America. An old friend Harry Banner who once saved his life over there but hasn't seen him for six years rings him up and Cade has no hesitation to invite him over. Banner has just returned from Venezuela and seems deeply troubled but won't tell Cade a thing. Upon leaving Cade's apartment for his hotel Banner asks him if he wouldn't mind holding onto a package for him, telling him he's travelling and will be back in a few days. Cade does and when a policeman wakes him up the next morning telling him to accompany him to a hotel Cade's pretty sure Banner is in trouble. At the hotel he is shown Banner's body and when he gets home learns his apartment has been turned over. Banner told him who his last employer was but nothing else, so Cade decides he'll go to Venezuela and track down some answers for himself, but first he'll open the package!

The best Pattinson novels worth checking out are Ocean Prize, Feast of the Scorpion, Avenger of Blood, Blind Date, Homecoming, The Silent Voyage, Skeleton Island, The Time of Your Life, Away With Murder, The Murmansk Assignment, Obituary for Howard Grey, Crane, The Animal Gang, Spoilers, The Golden Reef, A Car for Mr Bradley, Bavarian Sunset, The Sinister Stars, Fat Man from Colombia, the Spayde Conspiracy and Life Preserver.
