The best, the worst, and everything else.,
By Alex (College Park, MD) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Roger Ebert's Movie Yearbook 2001 (Paperback)
I was a little surprised to find Ebert's writing slightly rough and disorganized. Bits of plot, comments on whether or not the actors fit the parts, and moments of amazing lucidity occur in the reviews in no specific order. Nevertheless, the conversational tone works and the reviews flow well. This guide to recent movies is as good as any, and probably better, since it includes reviews for movie festival entries, foreign films, and more. The guide also includes several indexes of movies and actors, and most (if not all) Answerman entries. It isn't true that Roger Ebert is completely unbiased, and most of the entertainment (if any) derived from reading this installation in the yearly series will come from looking for his unique, personal stance on the art of moviemaking. Most action flicks, sordid teen dramas, dead-end forbidden romances, and a great many others are viciously shot down and trampled upon. On the other hand, fairly innocuous and endearing movies, especially if they are foreign-made, are gently supported like top-heavy saplings. Oh, and do watch out for Ebert's take on "Pokemon: the Movie". It's absolutely hilarious.

Ebert at his best,
This review is from: Roger Ebert's Movie Yearbook 2001 (Paperback)
This thick book contains all of Ebert's reviews of movies released in the past year, as well as his weekly articles and his notes from attending film festivals such as Cannes. If you're a movie fan and would like a book to refer to when choosing videos, or want some scoop on the various festivals around the world, Ebert's yearbook (updated annually) should be what you need.

Reviewer For The Masses,
By A Customer
This review is from: Roger Ebert's Movie Yearbook 2001 (Paperback)
Roger Ebert is a movie critic. Gene Siskel was a film critic. Ebert is truely a movie reviewer for the masses. He does a good job pointing the common mind toward the all of the movies made for them to consume. After all, it was Roger who said that "Three Kings" was one of the best movies of 1999 (#3 to be exact). Need I say more? For the rest of us our only filter was Gene Siskel who was a far superior film critic to Ebert, and everyone else for that matter. If you are a movie fan then this book will help you with your movie rental search and keep you from wasting money on the real mind numbing garbage. However, if you like film, search elsewhere.

Roger Ebert reviews from 1998-20000,
By
This review is from: Roger Ebert's Movie Yearbook 2001 (Paperback)
This yearbook has reviews that Roger Ebert has written for his paper from 1998-2000. The 1998 reviews he wrote that he reviewed on his show with the late Gene Siskel and today Richard Roeper. But today I ws surpised to see that Ebert & Roeper and the movies are moving from channel 2 to channel 7. Actually I made the mssing from channel 2 yeasterday. And he will to it with Roeper in a new balcany. If you are looking for a movie good for kids then check out My Dog Skip, Stuart Little, Antz, Toy Story 2 for a start. There are aslo plenty of R rated movies, like Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo and Livers of the Artic Circle, South Park, Biggger, Longer and Uncut, The Limey, and Lets Talk Sex. If you have a teen from 13-16 years and can't watch R rated movies and doesn't care for children's movies anymore then have them check out Patch Adams, Jakob the Liar, Bicentennial Man, Big Daddy. If you have a big Chicago Bulls fan then have him or check out Michael Jordan to the Max either on dvd/video or on the imax on Navy Pier. If you want any older movie that has already been reviewed in a earlier book then check out pages 827-855 for a star rating the year and the rating. There soemthing for every one.
