Book Description

Great American Sports Legends September 15, 2002
If at one time the Dallas Cowboys were America’s Team, Roger Staubach was America’s Quarterback. Roger the Dodger was a real-life embodiment of apple pie, world championships, and role models. Staubach was a Heisman Trophy winner at Annapolis who served four years as a naval officer before going on to a stellar eleven-year career with the Dallas Cowboys that included four NFC championships and two Super Bowl titles. Considered the master of the two-minute offense and late-game comeback, Staubach eventually earned a spot in the Cowboys’ illustrious Ring of Honor and, ultimately in 1985, the Pro Football Hall of Fame. If ever there was a perfect meshing of franchise, coach, and on-field leader, it was the silver-white-and-blue Cowboys of the seventies with Tom Landry strolling the sidelines in his trademark fedora and the unflappable Staubach barking signals. He led the NFL in passing five times, and when he retired at age thirty-seven he departed t!

he game in possession of the highest quarterback rating of all time. After his retirement from football, he pretty much left the game behind, forsaking a shot at coaching or television commentary to focus his energies on the corporate world as chairman and CEO of the Staubach Company, a diversified commercial real estate company. Roger Staubach: Captain America is an oral history of Staubach’s life, times, and career. It is told in the words of dozens of former teammates and opponents, friends, business associates, civic leaders, acquaintances, and others who have known him over the years. Staubach turned sixty in 2002, and this book offers a touching and telling testimonial to a true American hero and role model.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not What is Advertised, April 7, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is not the words of Roger Staubach and has very very little reflection by the man himself. This book has the recollections of high school friends, people in high school who did not even know Roger, people from the Naval Academy who did not even know Roger and little from Cowboys players or coaches. I did not want to read the comments from people who had never met Staubach and it served as a disappointment. It was disheartening to have very little from Staubach. The book basically is like a bunch of fans sitting around the table (who never met Roger) discussing his life. Not what I wanted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captain America: Legend and Role Model, January 6, 2011
By
This review is from: Roger Staubach: Captain America (Great American Sports Legends) (Paperback)
On the eve of my 40th year as a Cowboys fan, I decided to 'return to my roots' by reading a book about one of my earliest childhood idols, Roger Staubach. Not only did I rediscover many long-dormant football memories, I also discovered more reasons to further respect and admire him as a great winner, leader, competitor, and all-around good, spiritual man.

This book is an excellent biographical profile of Pro Football Hall-of-Fame quarterback, Roger "Captain America" Staubach of "America's Team," the Dallas Cowboys. Something I really liked about this book was it contained many personal recollections from people from Roger's pre-NFL days (childhood friends, high school and Naval Academy classmates, teammates, and coaches) and from his post-NFL life (friends, employees, business competitors). Their comments foreshadowed the success Roger was to achieve on the gridiron, and showed that Roger has extended his success into the competitive business environment. Equally impressive was reading how Roger remains connected to and respected by his many friends and influences, including his business competitors.

My son is in the fourth grade, and he is also a die-hard Cowboys fan. I will encourage him to read this book to learn about a true Cowboys legend, and, more importantly, to learn about a great man of character and integrity.
