Book Description

December 1, 2008
The stranger could be insane. Or he just might be our salvation. Archaeologist Annja Creed is more than curious when a decrepit, ancient-looking man visits her, claiming the end of the world is near. The stranger spins wild tales and speaks as if he actually knew King Arthur. But, strangest of all, he insists that Annja is the only one who can stop the horrible event that is about to happen. When Annja's mentor and friend Roux goes missing, she quickly realizes there may be something to the stranger's stories. Making her way through the dark and violent underbelly of Istanbul, Annja must find her missing friend and the Holy Grail before the relic gets into the wrong hands. She may not fully believe the fate of the world is on the line, but she doesn't really want to die finding out.

Review

When sexy archaeologist Annja Creed is visited by an ominous stranger who claims the Apocalypse is at hand, she isn't immediately sold. However, after a close friend vanishes, she comes to accept the stranger's prophecy as gospel and convinces herself that he is the key to eternal salvation. This program benefits tremendously from the high-production values and assembled casts that have become a trademark of the series, which combines easy-to-love protagonists with easy-to-revile antiheroes in a way that might seem clichéd in any other medium. However, the abundance of over-the-top special effects and semitransparent performances only serve to make this recording all the more enjoyable as it transmits as good-old-fashioned radio theater to the max. 5.0 out of 5 stars Gabriel's Horn is easily my favorite book in the series to date, March 18, 2009

The Rogue Angel series by Alex Archer is not slowing down! Gabriel's Horn is easily my favorite book in the series to date. I loved it!

Archeologist Annja Creed is on set as an advisor for a movie being filmed in Europe when everything goes wrong. Her invitation to the country is revoked and she is sent back to the United States. Strange things are going on stateside too, however, with more attacks and dead bodies piling up in inopportune circumstances.

As if that wasn't enough, a homeless man approaches Annja, warning her the apocalypse is coming soon and she's the only one who can stop it. Still more events unfold as well Annja's mentor and friend Roux going missing, forcing her to partner with Garen Braden, and the odd homeless man who seems ageless to find a legendary painting of The Nephilim. Rumor has it this painting hides a map to the most spectacular of treasures, and more than one enemy faction wants those secrets. Annja is in a race against time to find the painting, track down Roux, and avert disaster of the greatest proportions. All in a day's work for the indefatigable Annja Creed.

Ever since reading book one, Destiny, and meeting Roux and Garen, I have been hoping they'd eventually get to be the stars in a book in the Rogue Angel series. Finally, I have that book! Annja is always a predominant character, but here she takes a back seat to Roux's quest as he takes the leading role. I love that about this book! Roux is on a mission to find something, though for the majority of the book we have no idea what that key element is nor do we know why he wants it so badly. I almost wish this book were titled something different since we don't even know there is a Gabriel's Horn until probably the final third of the book. I kept waiting and waiting for the title to mean something with all of the talk about the Nephilim painting being what everyone is after.

Mystery is the name of the game here with so many seemingly disconnected people and events. Annja's new homeless friend spouts nonsense as if he's been around since the time of King Arthur himself! Then there is the fact we aren't quite sure, nor is Annja, if he's friend or foe. Roux vanishes into thin air in his search and two enemies, who have some odd connection as well, Saladin and Salome, want the painting badly enough to kill for it though for a long time we don't know why. Treasure maps are uncovered in the strangest of places leading to some mystical artifact. We have the legend of the Sleeping Kings (like Good King Wenceslas) who are supposed to protect the world when at greatest need, but they may actually do more harm than good. Of course, we can't forget the legend of an ancient horn believed to have the power to unmake the world!

Gabriel's Horn was fantastic! I hope we get a chance to revisit some of the secondary players here in future books and that we will again at some point have another book starring Roux and Garen.
