Very nice, resonant sound.

I cannot help but play this mandolin daily and highly recommend it for beginners and veterans desiring a low-cost, knock-around instrument.

I asked for an instrument for my last birthday, and lo and behold, I'm now beginning to learn to pick out tunes on the mandolin!

I wanted to wait a while before writing a review to see just how well the instrument held up. I've had it for over a month now. I've traveled with it, played it hard, and practice with it regularly. By this time, I was expecting to have broken a string or come across some other problems, but it has done very well. I haven't had the problem with the string cutting into the nut like the other review said, so it may be a hit or miss thing. What really surprised me about it was the sound. I mean, for the price it's awesome. This is my starter mando, something I just wanted to try out and see if I would dig it or not. The sound and the playability definitely encourages me to take it further. On the higher strings the tone is so good. I liken it to playing in a place with a lot of natural reverb, that's just the feel I get from it and I love it. I was a guitar player for about 18 months and was worried about how the transition would be. It took some getting used to, but now it's my preference. When I pick up my old acoustic, it feels so awkward lol. The only down side was dealing with the new strings at first. It wouldn't hold tune very well. So I'd recommend getting a clip on chromatic tuner for quick tuning if you don't already have one. It really comes in handy for the first week. After that, it's like a guitar. You can set it down for a few days and not worry about major tuning when you come back to it. So would I recommend it? Yes. Especially if you're looking to just play around with it and see if this instrument suits you. For the price, you can't do any better.

Unfortunately I cant compare this one with the f hole one that has gotten all of the attention, ( Rogue RM-100A A-Style Mandolin, Black) but most of the things people said about the other one seem to hold for this one as well. It has a Loud, Bright sound that very well approximates that of a "real" mandolin. And the finish is stunning, frankly, for a beginner instrument. Ours didn't have any problems with setup. The only drawbacks are that the tuners are cheap and there's no truss rod. Maybe this isn't a proffessional instrument but it's the best value I can imagine. a Perfect starter instrument.

Prompt delivery. Good quality for the price. The bridge is adjustable, but the top is thin, which allows the mandolin to be louder. The finish is smooth throughout. The strings do cut into the nut, and stick, which, especially for the E strings, makes tuning just a bit frustrating. Still, a good learning instrument.

After replacing the factory strings, this mandolin acquired a real mandolin sound, allaying my worries about the sacrifice of quality for low cost. I cannot help but play this mandolin daily and highly recommend it for beginners and veterans desiring a low-cost, knock-around instrument.

I've never played an instrument before but I *love* this mandolin. Perfect for me and my beginner needs but I'm sure it will last me for years to come!

I would rate this mandolin five stars within its low cost field of competition of oval hole "A style" Mandolins. I recently purchased this instrument not realizing how the fret board and strings were moved upward from the sound hole. It would help buyers to have a side view photo to see before buying. However, I am a banjo player and use a finger style technique. This is not a problem at all. It would definitely take getting used to for flat picking, finding a comfortable position for anchoring your wrist, forearm. I can see how the design strengthens the neck joint, where Mandolins usually have problems with age. It does not have a truss rod, but that's related only to curvature of the fret board, usually not a problem with such a short neck. If I could give the manufacturer advice I would say use better tuners. Maybe a more basic appearance and pay more attention to the tuners.

Very nice, resonant sound. Very appealing piece, and generally well made. However the little metal piece on the end sometime falls off, but it can be latched right back on.

I got no issues, but I guess I was just lucky. Everyone seems to have major issues with the strings going out of tune super often. I, on the other hand, rarely have to tune it. (Good thing too! I have no tuner.) The only real issue I had, was while tuning it, one of the high strings popped out, but that's not too much of an issue as the mandolin can work whiles missing even half of it's strings. Not to mention, these are default strings, you can restring it. Overall, I am very very happy with this purchase, amazing deal.
