5.0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Read July 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Do you like fantasy? Do you like adventure? Do you like a book you could easily see made into a movie? Then you have to read Phil Stern's Rogue Powers.

This is the story of a land where special powers are not uncommon but definitely not treated fairly. Royalty may possess these powers, but anyone considered a commoner is removed from society. Secrecy becomes important for survival. But what happens when royalty falls in love with a commoner? You have an age old story told in a new way.

Mr. Stern writes in an engaging manner that has you wanting to read to the last page. He does an excellent job of taking this familiar storyline and giving it a few extra twists and adventures to where the reader is far from bored. This is not just a fantasy. It is a romance in a fantasy world that takes the reader on a multitude of adventures.

The author pulls story lines together in a smooth way that is easy to read and not hard for the reader to follow. If you don't like 'magic' or references to dark powers, this might not be a book for you to read this summer. Otherwise, you have to pick this book up. It will help you get through these hot days or the cold nights. Afterwards, you'll want more of Mr. Stern.

3.0 out of 5 stars Review by Stephanie Green ([...]) May 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is about a Kingdom which is made up of normal, "common" people and also the "empowered". These empowered possess a wide array of telepathic powers. The empowered here are only allowed to be of the noble blood, royal, and live within the Kingdom itself, free to showcase their abilities at will.
The "common" are believed to be powerless and, if one so happens to have these abilities, they must hide them from all others, or face arrest and death. One such young man is Anson, a very powerful boy living with his mother in the outlying town of Hylen.
When Anson is sent to the Kingdom to enlist in it's army, as apparently all common males do at a certain age, his mother is fearful of his discovery. Although he is very skilled at shielding his power from being detected, one royal is powerful enough to sense him; immediately, a connection is made between the two. The girl, Lydia, is a princess and is unwillingly betrothed to the heinous Prince Tenen.
We follow the two as they discover each other's love and eventually attempt to escape the Kingdom.
I enjoyed this book quite a bit, actually. The abilities of the society were quite impressive and interesting. I felt like there was a bit of drama and action, but could have been more.
The only thing, though, that really disappointed me was the ending.. I would have liked just a few more pages, just to give us a bit more of an idea of how the lives of the main characters eventually panned out. There was a very brief bit about it, but not nearly enough. All in all, a very good book, though.
I give this book 3 stars.

More About the Author

Phil Stern is the author of both Contemporary and Science Fiction.

The Cross-Worlds Coven series chronicles the adventures of Tiffany Smith, an Earth-based sorceress trying to juxtapose her own morality with the less savory aspects of coven life. The third book is due for release in August of 2013, with Earth Fire, the second installment, recently published in April.

Stern is also the author of the Aydian Series. Fans can look for the second book, the sequel to Aydia, in January of 2014.

Rogue Powers, The Reclaimed, and A Time For Ryda are other Science Fiction titles now available on Kindle.

His debut novel, The Bull Years, was published in 2011. A hard-hitting commentary on both the frustrations and ultimate validation of modern-day life, The Bull Years follows the lives of four people throughout the late 80′s, 90′s, and into the 21st century, directly addressing the gradual alienation and disconnection often experienced during young adulthood.

"I wanted to write about characters everyone could relate to," Stern says. "We've all had our ups and downs. I think people sometimes feel everyone else has experienced more success than they have, or are more firmly grounded in our world than they could ever be. My hope is that everyone will recognize a little part of themselves in Steve, Sophia, Dave, and Brooke."
