"The King of B-Westerns & Serials...VCI Entertainment ~ Rogue of the Range (1936)",
This review is from: Rogue of the Range [VHS] (VHS Tape)
VCI Entertainment and Supreme Pictures present "Rogue of the Range" (1936) (digitally remastered), long running Johnny Mack Brown series turned out in the early '30s...the story line has Johnny Mack brown robbing a stage beating the other outlaws to the punch...Brown tells the stage driver to charge this holdup to "The Rogue of the Range"...the outlaws chase Brown and his hard riding close-ups are something to behold... next scene we see our hero saving a damsel Phyllis Hume in distress only to find her Grandfather didn't make it...Johnny Mack gets himself thrown into prison, but alas he is really an undercover government man trying to get a lead on the gang operating in these parts and their headman...Lois January is Brown's love interest and they are great together in every scene...Alden Chase is the leader and he is getting wise to Johnny Mack and the sheriff Horace Murphy, and soon discovers things aren't what they seem...Chase tips off Jack Rockwell that Brown is a spy and needs to be dealt with...will the final showdown have a brawl in the cabin hideout...well don't leave the theater until Johnny Mack Brown asks Lois January to marry him, now he's in real trouble.Under director S. Roy Luby, producer A.W. Hackel, original story and adaptation by Earle Snell, music supervisor Lee Zahler ...the cast include a very young Johnny Mack Brown (Dan Doran), Lois January (Stella Lamb), Alden Chase (Lige Branscomb), Phyllis Hume (Tess), George Ball (Jim Mitchell), Jack Rockwell (Sloan), Horace Murphy (Sheriff Tom), Frank Ball (express agent), Lloyd Ingraham (doctor), Forrest Taylor (Pinky/prison guard). . . . . . .special footnote, actor Jack Rockwell played a lawmen probably more than any other actor in westerns...sheriff, a marshal, a Texas Ranger... if you were watching any western from the 1920s to the 1940s - especially from Columbia or Republic...when somebody wearing a badge and a gun showed up on onscreen, chances are it was Jack Rockwell...he appeared in around 252 films in his career beginning with "The Prairie King" (1927). . .not all of his roles were lawmen, but enough of them were to ensure that western aficionados will forever identify Jack Rockwell as the man who represented the law in the West. . .check out all of this and more in a new book "Best of the Badmen" by Boyd Magers, Bob Nareau and Bobby Copeland, available from Amazon and Empire Publishing pick up your copy today. . . . . . .another special footnote actor Johnny Mack Brown had a long film association with producer A.W. Hackel in a series of sixteen B-Westerns for the independent Poverty Row's Supreme Pictures, many directed by Sam Newfield and S. Roy Luby...associate producer A. William Hackel also produced a series of Bob Steele B-Westerns........meanwhile back to another great Johnny Mack B-Western provided by Supreme Pictures during their heyday of the early '30s.
