A Decent Action Title, 3rd Person Shooter...,
By
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Rogue Trooper (DVD-ROM)
As a fan of the comic on which this game is based, I was pleasently surprised by Rogue Trooper. The game has a well constructed interface and the graphics are very good.
The main story behind the game is that you are the sole surviving member of a group of genetically enhanced soldiers, fighting on a war-ravaged planet far in the future. Three other members of your unit have been preserved as "bio-chips" that are attached to different pieces of your equipment and weapons. Besides running, shooting and throwing grenades, resource gathering is an important part of the game. You must collect raw materials to manufacture weapons upgrades and ammunition. You have a choice of which weapons to upgrade and when which adds to Rogue Troopers "fun factor". Sniping is also available, due to the sniper-scope weapons option. For certain levels in the game, sniping is a must. Stealth objectives involve sniping along with the creation and use of silencers and setting booby-traps. Also, Rogue Trooper gets points for not having any crazy "Steam-like" software associated with it. Install Rogue Trooper from the 3 CDs, then play it. That's all. Rogue Trooper is a moderately priced game that is well worth your time and $$.

Good Shooting Game but Little Storyline,
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Rogue Trooper (DVD-ROM)
An adaptation of the comic of the same name, "Rogue Trooper" takes the futuristic setting and characters of the comic world and transfers them into a playable form.
Rogue Trooper takes place in the future on "Nu-Earth", a planet contested by two factions: The fascist Norts and the confederate Southers. Due to years of war, the surface of Nu World is poisonous to regular humans; thus, the Southers created the GIs, or Genetic Infantry, who were immune to the planet's toxins. GIs are all implanted with Bio-Chips that will sustain them should they fall in combat. The Bio-Chip can then be transferred to a piece of equipment for another GI. In Rogue Trooper, the main character is Rogue, a GI, and his team consists of three other soldiers, all of whom fall in combat and are put into one of Rogue's pieces of equipment. These characters pretty much define the gameplay. Gunnar is the trooper put into Rogue's rifle. The rifle is the main (and pretty much only) weapon in the game, but it can be fitted with many attachments. These include a sniper scope, a silencer, and under-barrel weapons like shotguns and grenade launchers. Gunnar can also be deployed remotely as a sentry gun (leaving Rogue with only his pistol). Finally, Gunnar will auto-target enemies and can give an accuracy bonus to Rogue's shots. Bagman is the trooper in Rogue's backpack. The backpack contains robotic arms that will reload Rogue's weapons or give him necessary medical attention (via a syringe full of medical juice), both of which Bagman will do automatically if Rogue needs it. Bagman can also dispense mini-mines, either as controlled demolition or as a proximity mine. Rogue can collect salvage from dead enemy troopers or from scrap piles, which Bagman can convert into ammo and supplies. Bagman can also upgrade Rogue's gear and research new gear, such as grenades of various types. Helm is the trooper in Rogue's helmet. He serves as more of a technical unit; placing Rogue's helmet on a console allows Helm to hack into it. He can also create holographic decoys and make a loud noise to lure sentries over. Gameplay is mostly run-and-gun.. Besides the rifle and its attachments, weapons in the game include mounted machine guns and rocket launchers, grenades of various types, and a pistol. The Norts are the game's enemies and have many different incarnations, though most share the weakness that they rely on their large oxygen tanks to keep them alive. Hitting them in the tank will make them explode, which can damage other nearby enemies as well. Rogue can take cover behind certain walls and shoot out from behind it. Stealth is also an option in some areas, and it tends to be helpful but not necessary. The game handles pretty well in general. Voice acting is acceptable, but kind of weak. Gunnar, Bagman, and Helm all talk to Rogue, but the chatter tends to be fairly low-key and not really superbly written. The sound in general wasn't really notable. As a whole, this is a good shooting game. The setting was neat (and is explored more in encyclopedia entries that are unlocked as you play the game) but the story is pretty much nonexistent (though to be fair it follows the plot of the comic almost exactly). It's a good game, with a lot of neat features, and it's simple enough at that. 7/10.

There was alot of thought put into this game i have to say. From the detailed backgrounds, to the characters. Very faithful to the orginal comics, to the dot surprisingly. Hardcore fans of the comics will love this game. A vast improvement on Eidos' Judge Dredd release and far more playable.
Highly recommended to any 2000AD, Rogue Trooper or Judge Dredd fans out there.

We PC gamers who like action shooters are in a very slow period. All the good shooter games have been around awhile. Most all of them have been played. The newer stuff isnt much good.I am a discriminating game player and i recommend rogue trooper.Instead of developing new games the game makers are busy developing short expansion paks and selling them for full game prices. These are a RIP OFF and only suckers will buy them.

3rd person shooter with RPG type upgrades.,
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

Overall, a well done and interesting game!
I had some serious reservations about this game early on. Initially, it was just about impossible to get killed, making the game extremely simplistic and, in a word, boring. This "flaw" lasted only 2-3 levels at which point things became much more interesting and complex. There were several pros and a few cons... The Pros: 1.)Reasonably good graphics and audio. 2.)A variety of weapons and components (most of which have significant upgrade potential). However, you only have a limited amount of upgrade points ("salvage"), so choosing the right upgrade is important, as it can significantly impact your abilities. 3.)Some First Person Shooter (FPS) capabilities when using a bunkered machine gun or flak cannon. 4.)A couple of extended episodes of FPS that involves you controlling a gun from a moving vehicle. 5.)A really satisfying sniper component to this game. 6.)A brutal finale; it took me a couple of days to get through this on "hard"; you have to use nearly all your "skills", but above all, you need to have patience to complete this level. 7.)Some replayability; although the game challenges would be the same, you could try doing it with a completely different set of weapons and upgrades. Cons: 1.)3rd person shooter vs. FPS, but the game (after the first couple of very easy levels) was so good, I didn't even notice the difference after a while. 2.)Game could only be restarted (when loading or after dying) from the beginning of the level or a specified checkpoints. No quick-saves! And then, once a level was finished, you could not replay it until you finished the entire game (at this point you could replay any level you wanted) 3.)The AI of the majority of the enemies was, at best, fair; they showed limited abilities to protect themselves when under fire, usually making them easy targets. (but thankfully, there were a few that were a real challenge) 4.)Linear game play, with only some limited ability to deviate from the main path of completing your objectives. (with a compass arrow always pointing the way to proceed) In summary; a game I almost quit because it appeared, initially, too easy. It turned out to be a fun 3rd person shooter with some RPG upgrades. 5 Stars

This game is just plain fun. It's not too difficult at the normal setting, and the graphics are good. You have to move through levels with reasonable checkpoints. You search for salvage in order to build things and obtain weapons, and buy ammo, and med kits. You get to snipe the enemy, use various weapons and sometimes the combat is fierce. This is an all around great game. I enjoyed it very much. I hope it's successful enough for a sequel.

NOT for the MAC platform.,
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Rogue Trooper (DVD-ROM)
This is not a review of the game but a comment on the WIN/MAC description on the "platform" specifications of the product. I only rated it since it is compulsory to post this note.
It is mentioned in this site that the game is, apparently, for both platforms. Also seems to indicate that the same item would work in both, as some other games do (E.G. "The Incredibles", "Myst V: End of Ages", "WoW", etc.). But alas, it is not so. It is a mistake in the description. There is no place in the Amazon site (nor any other that Google kindly placed at my disposition) that specifies or clarifies this point. Anyhow, being quite cheap I purchased it. After opening it I did find a Macintosh usable ".bin" file within the disc, but short of using ancient elvish words to open it, all I tried failed. All other files and literature in the CD and the box, said it was only for a PC. This game does NOT work on either Macs, be those Pentium or of the "Gs". I have tried in both kinds and none takes warmly to it, that is using the OS. Using Windows in a Pentium Mac is another story, it does work. But then again, that is not Mac, it is Windows, and the description should state so.

Rogue Trooper is based on the graphic novel "2000 AD" created by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons. The story takes place on Nu-Earth, a planet where perpetual war between the Norts and Southers is being waged. During the war all forms of chemical and biological weapons have been used poisoning the planet. The troops of both sides must live in enclosed cities and fight in protective gear. The Southers have, through genetic engineering, developed a race of blue skinned soldiers (G.I. Genetic Infantrymen) who are immune to the toxic atmosphere. The Southers hope they will be able to turn the tide of the war with their new warriors. The Souther High Command deploy their secret weapon in an airborne assault. Unfortunately a traitor has betrayed the secret of the G.I. to the Norts and they are massacred during the drop. This is where you begin the games journey as a G.I. named Rogue. As the only surviving G.I., you go AWOL in an effort to track down the Traitor General responsible for the massacre. Here are my thoughts on Rogue Trooper;
Pros + Fluid game play. + Plenty unique ways to deal with enemies. + Salvage, manufacture and upgrade weapon system was a refreshing concept ensuring that you never ran out of ammo. + Some decent graphics. The sky in particular was particularly impressive with its spiraling vortex of stars. + Left open for a sequel. + Based on the graphic novel by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave "Watchmen" Gibbons. Cons - AI is rather poor and their constant banter during combat becomes tiresome. - Keyboard controls were unable to be changed. - Limited resolution options. - Checkpoint save system can sometimes be a pain. - Too short. The length of the game really doesn't allow you to fully utilize all of your unique/situational abilities (holo projection, sticky mines etc.). - Weak/few boss battles. - No vehicles to control or drive. Just a few turrets/cannons to man. See Halo if you want to see this done correctly. - Voices of micro chipped fellow troopers become repetitive and annoying (Bagman, Gunner, and Helm) much like the opponent's reoccurring one liners. - Rather thin storyline. Despite its brief content, Rogue Trooper was a solid, satisfying and accomplished 3rd person shooter, especially for the price. It didn't necessarily make me want to go out a play a sequel or read the graphic novels but I thought the basic premise of the story was interesting resulting in a fun game.
