Being a big fan of sci-fi 3rd person shooters, I'm always on the lookout for a really good one. Rogue Trooper hit all the right buttons. For me, those buttons are: Great graphics, easy-to-master controls, and fun, varied gameplay.

As your comrades die you carve out their personality chips and attach them to your helmet, backpack, and assault rifle, an interesting and unique idea. They come along for the ride and allow various capabilities: Helmet is your computer/door hacker, Gunnar is your weapons guy (and you can put your rifle down to serve as a turret, which Gunnar clearly loves from the voice acting), and the backpack is where you "buy" ammo, weapons, and upgrades.

The "buy" is in parenthesis because they're technically "built" by your backpack via salvage you collect from fallen soldiers and scattered salvage piles (you have to look around to find the latter, as they're often semi-hidden, but they're big money compared to what you get from soldiers). So it's very important to salvage every possible soldier you kill, and find all the salvage piles.

As for gameplay, it's great fun. As I've said, the controls and charactor movement work extremely well and you have the options to crouch behind cover or hug walls, then aim/shoot around it. This helps keep you safe from fire as you pick off enemies.

One of my favorite things to do is use the scope and silencer to snipe out enemies from a distance. When you reach a particular area, hang back and snipe out enemies with headshots. Nearby enemies will hardly notice and you can make things a lot easier for yourself once in the fray if you've taken out most of them from afar first. There's also a feature that allows you to place a hologram of yourself nearby so enemies try to kill it while you are free to wipe them out. Unfortunately I didn't find it very effective.

You have an unlimited supply of mines, so you can cover your tracks or fire out a spread of them ahead of you for unsuspecting enemies to step on. Just remember to detonate them if they end up not being needed, as you can't plant more until they've detonated.

The missions are fun and challenging, but the game is never so hard that you feel ready to smash the controller against the nearest solid object. You can make it through most of the game without dying much, and a very good checkpoint system makes sure you don't have to repeat too much gameplay if you do get whacked.

Overall, this is a very well done, often genuinely unique, and fun game with no glaring faults. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars overall is because the ending is something of an anticlimax. I didn't even realize I was in the final battle until it was over and the game ended. A good sign, though; it leaves a sequal wide open. If the next is as good as this one, I'll be chomping at the bit to get my paws on it.

You control Rogue, a genetic infantry man created to battle the Norts on the polluted planet known as Nu-Earth. After his team is obliterated and placed into his helmet, gun, and backpack, Rogue is forced into an action packed adventure to seek revenge upon those who killed his buddies.

Rogue Trooper is your basic third person shooter complete with the standard behind-the-back camera angle. In this game you get two guns - a fully customizable but very weak assault rifle (by this I mean you attach a shotgun, sniper rifle, mortar launcher, rocket launcher, and laser beam onto it) and the useful-but-weak sidearm of a handgun. You can run, dive/roll, climb, throw 'nades, jump over obstacles, hug walls for cover, and do stealth kills. The stealth kills are pretty cool, you walk up to an unsuspecting Nort and stab them in the throat or rip off their breathing tubes and let them suffocate gaining an instant kill. There is a multiplayer, both online and off, but its kinda lame so I'm not gonna review it.

Back to the assault rifle. Gunnar can be placed as a turret which is VERY useful to watch your back, or help you take down hordes of enemies. Also, he can be silenced with a silencer for stealthy kills.

What seperates this game from other TPS games is the fact that you have to use your backpack to manage your inventory. Your inventory includes ammo, health packs, and grenades. Bagman, one of your buddies whose brain chip is in your backpack, can create ammo & grenades for you, as well as create & upgrade weapons for you depending on how much salvage you have. Salvage is what you pick up from dead bodies (both Souther and Norts) and found in junk piles around the levels. Consider this as your currency if you would. Its a bit confusing at first, but you'll get it down fast.

The graphics are pretty good for the most part, with only a few places seeming to be a bit...hmm...N64 fuzzyish? The characters are very well detailed, especially the GIs who have 6-pack abs. All the enemies and ships and emplacements all look really creative and unique. The levels & enviroments are especially good, everything is detailed and you can actually see battles taking place in the background.

Musically speaking, Rogue Trooper lacked. But the sound effects easily made up for it. The guns sound very brutal (...even though most of 'em are weak), the voice acting is really good & humorus at times (most notably Gunnar's famous line, "COME HERE NORTY!!") and the explosions are truley superb and are ear shattering.

Sadly though the ride doesn't last too long and you'll probably have this game beat within roughly 4-6 hours, and the ending isn't really worth all the trouble of the last level - The Southers blow up a building where Rogue is fighting off Nort troops and a traitorus Souther general. When Rogue survives the explosion and comes face to face with the brass who ordered the bombarding, Rogue is tempted to kill him as are his buddies in his equipment. He lets the Souther guy live, and flys off into the sunset. Souther troops begin inspecting the rubble of the building and find the traitorus general, but they dont know hes a traitor and help him up..hence setting up for a Rogue Trooper 2.

This game was really well made, very fun, had a deep story, and was decently priced at $30 beans. I suggest if you are still clinging to your "last gen" systems like I am, Rogue Trooper is a true gem that you hafta play.

Back in high school, I read ROGUE TROOPER comics, reprinted in the U.S. along with JUDGE DREDD. It's a surprise to see RT get a game after all of these years, and I was interested to see how the perpetual war comic would translate into 3D.

So far, I really like it. It's a 3rd person shooter with easy controls. Like in the comics, your gear is modified with "brain chips" taken from fallen comrades, which allow you to upgrade your weapons, use decoys, and manufacture items on the fly. It's all integrated rather nicely.

I've played about 3 hours into the game. Other reviews put the games length at under 6 hours. If that's true, the campaign is unfortunately short. I've also noticed a lack of boss battles... you get to the end of your mission and a cinematic plays out the conclusion. That's too bad. The cinematics are entertaining, but I would've liked to participate.

With little name recognition, ROGUE TROOPER is doomed to a sleeper title at best. The fighting is fun, there's a nice mix of upgradable weapons, and the graphics and story are enjoyable. On the downside, there appears to be a lack of boss battles and the campaign is rumored short. Knowing the comic will definitely increase your enjoyment.

I'm considering picking up the reprints, ROGUE TROOPER: THE FUTURE OF WAR.
