This review is from: The Rogue's Return (Signet Regency romance) (Paperback)
Anne Morland, grand daughter of a famous general and daughter of a famed opera singer, is drugged, and nearly raped by her evil cousin. After a struggle, in which she destroys her only nice dress, she believes that she has killed her cousin with a fireplace poker. In her attempt to escape from the sleazy inn where evil cousin has taken her, she runs into Dominick Deveraux.

Dominick has a temper and is also skilled shot with dueling pistols. This lethal combo has led to 3 duels and 3 dead bodies. The result Dominick is a fugitive from justice, who has secretly come back into the country to see his dying mother. Dominick talks Anne and a bystander, Albert, into fleeing the inn, as the police are on their way to arrest him.

After nearly killing Anne and Albert in a horrifying carriage ride, Dominick talks Anne into posing as a man until he can get her a decent dress. After running out on their bill at an inn, Anne, Albert and Dominick, get drunk on cheap wine and narrowly avoid being discovered and arrested. Dominick eventually takes Anne and Albert to his home, the Haven. All the while Dominick playfully insults Anne.

WE find at the Devereaux home, Dominick's dying mother, who has disowned Dominick,Trent, a reformed rake relative, and Meg, the woman Dominick was supposed to marry. AFter arguing with his mother, Anne, his cousin, Meg, the servants, the doctor....Dominick eventually decides to turn himself in.

Cousin Trent has to leave Dominick's mother to see to his wife who is having a baby. Before Dominick turns himself over to the police, he kisses Anne and leaves her in charge of his dying mother, the Haven, and a large quantity of money. Meanwhile,Dominick has secretly dispatched a servant to find out if Anne indeed has killed her cousin.

While Anne is in charge, she helps Dominick's mother to recover and she discovers she has not killed her cousin. In gratitude Anne decides to try to hire an attorney to get Dominick out of jail. As she visits Dominick in prison she pretends to be his betrothed. Dominick plays along and decides to kiss her and tell her what she means to him. Dominick eventually posts bond and offers Anne marriage, out of gratitude. She declines, because she has no prospects and because he has not told her that he loves her.

Dominick, while disappointed, looks for another way to win Anne's affection. Dominick takes Anne to visit her General Grandfather. While playfully arguing with Anne, Dominick threatens Anne's evil cousin with his deadly, dueling pistols. Will Anne decide to go and live with her elderly Grandfather the General, or will she decide to stay at the Haven and reform the rogue(once he goes to trial)?
