Most of the pictures I have taken with this lens look like the FBI surveillance photos of mobsters coming out of shady hang-outs in 1980's mob movies. That is to say that they are not super-sharp and do not have a fantastic dynamic range.

Many reviews called this lens a Toy and I have to agree; not to disparage the lens but to set the expectations -- you will need to play with this one to find love for it.

It has a sturdy construction. Definitely does not feel very toy-like.

The 500mm will really let you 'zoom in' on things far away.

The lens requires a good bit of light on the subject - but glare across the lens will kill dynamic range. Try to stand/setup in a shadow or use a lens hood if you can find or make one.

The lens has "bad bokeh" - that seems to be the technical term. I think it has its own aesthetic quality. A light source out of focus will be a ring. A branch out of focus will have ghosts with sharp edges which helps you find focus if you know what to look at. In general the out of focus areas will have a lot of false detail that can ruin the depth-of-field effect.

The lens adds a good bit of weight to the front of the camera. This will magnify camera shutter-shake on a tripod that is not rock-solid.

All in all it is hard to get a super-crisp photo with this lens. It may not even be possible (I have yet to do it).

Yet if you let go of the need for the quality of a $2000 lens and accept the lens for what it is then this lens is a lot of fun for the price. You can do a lot with it. The pictures it takes have their own aesthetic quality that is at least as good as any instagram filter.

I bought this with the Rokinon HD 2X Multiplier when I went to Costa Rica to be able to get close ups of the many active volcanos. I was able to use it once during the trip. It worked great, very good close ups, forgot my tripod though so had many shaky shots. Defintly recommend using tripod with this type of lens!

Lens would not fit a Canon EOS camera do to lack of a T adapter. One of the filters was packed disassembled. The box containing the filters was jambed in the lens bag and was difficult to remove. There was sufficient space to pack it separately. I wondered if the Quality Control was so poor on simple packing, what was it like on the assembly of the lens. So, I returned it for a refund rather than risk the same attention to detail being applied to the lens in a replacement.
