Product Description

Style:Canon

The new Rokinon 35mm Cine Lens is made especially for DSLR video enthusiasts, videographers and cinematographers. It features the same outstanding image quality as the standard Rokinon 35mm F1.4 lens but has the added benefits of de-clicked apertures and follow focus compatibility. De-clicked apertures means that there are no hard clicks when changing apertures and the aperture can be manually set to a very specific number (like f/1.7, f/2.8). The lens has also been constructed so that it can be easily attached to follow focus systems which are widely used by videographers. The Rokinon Cine lenses are the most affordable, high quality lenses in the market today.

If you wanted but couldn't really justify the purchase of a bunch of Zeiss primes, you might have stumbled across some forums and comparisons and found this lens. Just google "rokinon vs zeiss". A lot of very positive tests are out there with most reviewers concluding that they are selling their Zeiss lens and buying 2-3 more rokinons.

Based on that, I got this one.

It's exactly what you are hoping it is.

Great, low light, zero noise lens.

UPDATE:
I did some shooting in a very dark, shadowy forest this weekend. The footage was fantastic with the limitation coming from my 5d2 and not the lens. There was zero video artifacting or compression noise. Every shot was useful and looked great. Can't recommend this enough. Im going to get the 24mm next.

This 35mm lens is probably the best to own if you're only buying one Rokinon lens. If you're serious about the quality of your footage you will want this one. The 35mm allows both normal distance filming as well as gorgeous close-ups, and it has a beautiful out of focus blur in both modes. Always use support with this lens. It is not for shooting handheld. With clearly marked numbers and the longest barrel of the Rokinon lineup, it is also one of the most impressive pieces of glass you can mount on your camera. But looks aside, a 35mm lens that gives you the same cinematic look like a telephoto lens (without compressing space behind your subject) is probably every filmmaker's dream. Here you have it.

Style Name: Sony A Verified Purchase
I recently bought the Rokinon 85mm Cine lens to use on a Sony a99 camera, mostly for video. I found that I liked that particular lens so much that I started using it for still photography as well. In fact, I like the sharp look of those files so much that I started to look for more Rokinon lenses to put on my camera. I'd been researching this 35mm 1.5 Cine lens of Sony Alpha cameras for a couple of weeks when I noticed one of those mysterious Amazon price drops. It seemed like too much of a bargain to pass up so I went ahead a bought one. I'm very happy I did.

Stuff to get out of the way right up front: This (the 35mm Rokinon Cine lens) is absolutely a manual focus lens. There is no electronic interface between the lens and the camera. It does not focus for you. If you can't tolerate focusing the lens yourself then this is very much not a lens for you. No autofocus. But not having autofocus is part of the design and part of the appeal for me. It means that there's so much less stuff to go wrong with on this product. And most people who are seriously into making films and commercials on video use manual focus lenses because it gives them maximum control over the look of their images. If you are lucky enough to shoot with the new Sony SLT cameras you'll find manual focusing is made simple with the cameras' built in focus peaking. If you are shooting with more prehistoric Nikon and Canon bodies you'll probably want to use the lens on a tripod so you can depend on Live View and magnification to get sharp focus.

Stuff to get out of the way, part 2: Since there are no electronic linkages between camera and lens there is no automation beyond what the cameras naturally give you with aperture priority control.

This lens seems every bit as good as Canon L in terms of build quality and optics. So solid and smooth. I use it for filmmaking, and the de-clicked T-stop aperture wheel is awesome. It has built in gears so is made to work with a follow-focus, but performs just fine as a traditional handheld manual lens. Be aware, there is no communication with the camera, but I'm a believer in going full manual anyway.

(Please note that my reviews of these three lenses are all the same except for some technical differences)
I'm no lens guru, and I don't have much of a budget, so these lenses are perfect.
Coming from shooting DSLR to the Black Magic Cinema Camera, I was at least familiar with the functionality of these lenses. First thing I shot with them was a wedding and these were the only lenses I used on my camera. It takes a bit of getting used to working with all primes, but, with a t1.5 aperture, it's worth giving up the zoom since lighting isn't always the best.
I would recommend getting some super-wide angle lenses if you are shooting on a crop sensor like the BMCC as it more than doubles the focal length on these cameras (this one equates to about an 80mm).
The lenses are nice and heavy, suggesting a good build, and the focus is smooth. I haven't tried them with a follow-focus yet, but, anticipate doing so in the near future.
The de-clicked aperture is a nice feature too. It adds a smoothness to changing exposures while shooting that you cannot get with a regular DSLR lens, but, that can also be a problem if you are not paying attention because the aperture ring is easy to bump. That is in no way a complaint, just an observation and an issue I chalk up to user error and must get used to.

All in all, I really like these lenses and would recommend them to anyone on a budget. They are what they are, and what they are is an affordable tool to help you tell your story. I'm sure there are gear snobs who would frown on these, but, I feel that gear snobbery comes from a lack of vision and skill.
