The Roku 2 would be your best bet, as it doesn't require an HDTV with an HDMI connection to operate. The Roku 3 only has an HDMI output whereas the Roku 2 (and earlier models) you would use RCA type cables (red/white/yellow). You can view and compare the different models and their applications at: http://www.roku.com/products/compare
The Roku has several 'channels", but I cannot tell you if ESPN is one of them. This is not a device to replace a satellite connection if that is what you had in mind. I have Netflix and Amazon Prime so I use the roku to to be able to download movies and tv shows to my TV instead of just having to watch them on the computer. You may be able to go to Roku.com and see a list of some the channels you can receive.
