These microphone/ear buds are specifically designed for Roland's R-05 studio recorder. In that context, they are outstanding. There is a setting in the R-05 menu for "powered microphones" this must be activated. My guess is that these are "condenser-type" microphones and therefore need an external power source. This goes a long way in explaining how such a small microphone can sound so good. The fidelity of recording and playback is phenomenal. The true functionally of this system is best realized when you are using them to walk around picking up sounds as you would normally hear them. I recorded the sounds of a walk around a lake, the system picked-up the lapping of waves, the flutter whirligigs, the distant cry of loons, the banter of people kayaking out on the water, all in such natural timber and dynamics it was like being there again. I recorded the sounds of a violent thunder storm, the crash of ocean waves against the rocks, the cry of loons up close (50'), horses trotting etc. Each time the capture and reproduction was true and uncanny accurate.

For how small they are, I wasn't expecting it to be able to get everything. Playing back the audio back from the recorder with your eyes closed it puts you right back to what was happening.
The recorder I'm using is the Zoom H1 and works just fine. Don't use them for music however as it sounds muffled and the music will be caught on the mics if you're trying to use them for ambient recording while enjoying music.

These sound great for the price. Monitoring while recording takes some getting used to and doesn't sound great but it serves it's purpose. Without wind protection the mic housings are EXTREMELY sensitive to wind noise. I searched all over to see how people solved this problem, found basically nothing - but when I got the package I found that Roland has begun including specially fitted windscreens for the earbuds. NO SELLERS mention these windscreens, including Roland, as far as I can tell, so it strikes me as the kind of thing they added in the box after too many complaints of wind noise sensitivity. The screens spoil the inconspicuous/stealth aspect of these mics but handle most moderate wind noise problems just fine.
