Book Description

September 18, 2006
The Role of the Security Officer is an excellent choice for individuals, private consultants or college instructors searching for an appropriate student textbook that covers the fundamentals of basic security guard training. It is written in a lively and creative style that quickly grabs and holds the attention of the reader while covering the full range of fundamentals of the armed and unarmed security guard profession. The book was written to cover requirements of Washington State Armed and Unarmed Guard licensing training requirements but it meets or exceeds training needs in other states as well. Topics covered include: Crime & Loss Prevention, Security Guards & the Criminal Justice System, Legal Powers & Limitations, Security Observation & Awareness, EEO, Diversity, Workplace Violence, Homeland Security, Safeguarding & Sharing Information, Terrorism & Surveillance, Patrol Procedures, Access Control, Emergency Response, OSHA Life Safety & Accident Prevention, Communication, Report Writing, Armed Guard Firearms Safety & Training, Use of Deadly Force, Marksmanship, Defensive Driving, Armored Truck Security, Diplomatic Security & Blending In, Handcuffs & Handcuffing. There are summaries & quiz questions at the end of each chapter and a final exam that covers the entire book. A power point CD version of the book is available to assist instructors by contacting the author via his website. Michael Jaquish has nearly thirty years of management and training experience in for the domestic and international law enforcement and private security guard fields. More information about the book and the background and qualifications of the author may be obtained by visiting www.countrycopbooks.com.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

A note to the security professional:

This book has been created to provide you, the security professional, with a database that will assist you in understanding and complying with the basic requirements of the private security guard profession.

The author recognizes that although security duties are similar in nature throughout the industry, not all security companies provide the same kind of security services for their clients. Some operations in fact, are very narrowly focused, requiring particular attention to very specific areas of concern. It is therefore crucial that each training program be tailored to fit the unique needs of each organization.

If you are an instructor, you are expected to create an individual course outline, add information relative to your own particular needs and develop a syllabus that will allow you to pace your instruction to cover all required areas within the time allotted.

If you are a security guard, you are expected to follow the guidance of your instructor or supervisor in all areas covered in this book to ensure that the information does not conflict with local laws, company policies and procedures.

-Michael James Jaquish

From the Inside Flap

As with many other aspects of American life, the security profession changed drastically overnight following the terrorist attacks on American soil on September 11, 2001. In fact, those attacks ratcheted up the focus on security all over the globe. The sudden resulting clamor and need to seek out and consult with security professionals severely strained available resources and generated a new and fervent interest in security on all levels. Until 9/11, security was often relegated to the back burner by much of corporate America and many government agencies. My own experience in providing security services for US Embassy operations in West Africa from 1989 until 1996 was ripe with examples of this attitude. Much of my time was spent attempting to convince US State Department officials to perform simple upgrades to their perimeter security but this was continually met with the response that, "Oh yes, we agree with your observations, but unfortunately, there will be no funds allocated for such upgrades until something bad happens." Well, something bad did happen. Shortly after I left Africa, two US Embassy Chancery buildings in Africa were destroyed by car bombs that were set off directly in front of the buildings. Many human lives were lost needlessly because these vehicles had been placed in a strategically vulnerable position open to attack.

Experience is said to be the best teacher. Slowly and reluctantly, corporate and government organizations have finally lifted their heads out of the sand and decided that perhaps it is indeed more cost-effective and moral to be pre-emptive in their approach to security. Today, security stands as the number one priority. It will remain so for as long as we remain engaged in a war of global terrorism and most likely will continue to be a primary concern even after that conflict is resolved. Industry standards have changed from pre 9/11 times and they continue to evolve daily as new technology and techniques bubble up to the surface. The key to survival of free society and our species is tied closely to our ability to remain open minded, vigilant and adaptable in terms of our own security. Nothing therefore can be more important to humanity than the issue of security. Keep that in mind as you begin your journey into the security profession.
