It doesn't do what it should., April 10, 2010
This review is from: Rolemaster Player Guide (Rolemaster: The Standard System) (Paperback)
The Rolemaster Player Guide claims... "This book contains everything that a beginning rolemaster player needs to know about how to play." This book contains 78 pages.
1 page is dedicated to different types of dice rolls
2 pages is dedicated to rolemaster mechanics. They mostly do not make complete sense when not in the context found in the core rulebook. Given the massive amounts of rules in rolemaster, this this very lacking.
43 pages is dedicated to a small array of pregenerated characters from level 1 to 10. This is actually nice, but I would have preferred a clear guide as to how you actually create characters, a very difficult part of rolemaster. Note that these characters are completely done, the book does not tell you what the author did to create them. it just has a bunch of items, spells, and skills. This book was supposed to help new players get into rolemaster, not hand them characters.
the remaining 26 pages are dedicated to various charts, weapons, movement, etc. Copied directly from the core rulebook. Yay.
I would use this guide for playing a quick game of Rolemaster without doing any character creation, which is nice. You can get some friends together, and it does have a nice selection of characters to choose from, all are leveled from 1 to 10 for you. However, I purchased this item expecting clearly explained character creation rules, and clearly explained rules in general. All the things you would need as a beginning player, right?
Disappointing.
