5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome To The Rolexxx Club!!!, July 1, 2006
This review is from: The Rolexxx Club (Paperback)
Desiree Mirabella Torres Jackson (aka Dez) is a young runaway who dreams of a bright future. She begins working as a stripper at Miami's famous Rolexxx Club as a way to pay the bills before pursuing her dreams as a rap superstar. Dez soon meets veteran stripper Ginger who teaches her how use her beauty to get what she wants. Dez gets all of the material things but gives up her innocence in the process. After struggling as a video model and backup singer, Dez hooks up with the world hottest hip-hop superstar Bentley and his label Titanium Records. Bentley is instantly attracted to Dez, and his brother Sparks immediately notices her talent and signs her to the label. Dez is on top of the music world but her painful past and a deadly jealous rage may cause her world to crumble.

The Rolexxx Club is an exhilarating debut novel by Meta Smith. Smith gives the reader an inside look into the wild entertainment industry. You will definitely feel all of the energy and excitement as Dez makes her rise to superstardom. I thought the storyline was realistic and the scenes were so descriptive that I felt like I was actually there experiencing everything with Dez. This novel captured my attention from the very first page. Even though this is an excellent coming of age story, there is a good dose of drama, suspense, and murder. This author also dealt with the issue of a woman's self worth and how that can influence the decisions she makes in her life. Readers will also be surprised at the unique twist of this story that will surely leave room for a sequel. The Rolexxx Club has glitz, glamour, and street savvy that will surely satisfy its readers. Meta Smith is ready to take hip-hop lit to the next level.

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Rolexxx Club (Paperback)

Down in Florida, where parties go on to the next level, Desiree finds herself in the infamous Rolexxx Club. It is here where she meets Ginger and learns that stripping is not where the real money is and the little extra she is willing to do sends her on her way to her dreams. Unfortunately, for her, on her way from stripper et al to rapper, she stepped on too many toes and the price may be way too high.

The Rolexxx Club definitely starts off as one book and ends as another. We begin in the belly of the beast where anything goes and end up with a definite change of focus. The basics of writing dictate that a character transitions in some way, which Ms. Smith does show in this novel. Desiree transforms from an underage victim of the lusts of the world to a woman who understands there are some things greater than her. Although a bit contrived, the foundation was set for the transition which gave her Desiree credibility. This in itself is not a problem but the journey was a bit choppy for this reader and the message that was embedded in the story was a bit preachy. There were also a few characters who acted as catalysts in the story that I wish I had known more about.

The Rolexxx Club is Meta Smith's debut and considering, it is an entertaining read. I see that she has a lot of promise. Although I am not a regular reader of this genre I would read another novel by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Work of Fiction I Have Read This Year, July 11, 2006
This review is from: The Rolexxx Club (Paperback)
The author's debut deals with controversial issues including sex, drugs, relationships and religion. This fictional book shows some questionable behaviors by the characters and the serious consequences of those behaviors. In the end, there is an underlining message of recovery and deliverance. This is a good read; The Rolexxx Club is "Bling Fiction", definitely not for kids as you can tell by the title. Ironically, the villain has a few good qualities and the heroine Dez has some real weaknesses. It is a hard book to put down, written with a detailed authenticity derived from the author's amazingly diverse life experiences. It is the best work of fiction I have read this year.

This review is from: The Rolexxx Club (Paperback)
Eighteen-year-old Desiree 'Dez' Jackson's story begins in 1999, when she flees New York City running from her life and reaching for her dream of becoming a rap star. Her destiny leads her to the Rolexxx Club, the hottest black strip club in Miami. There she meets Ginger, one of the top strippers, who becomes her mentor. With Ginger she learns to master her skills, to play the game, and to attract men with the paper. Dez goes from stripper to video dancer/model in less than two years. Finally she gets the break she needs; she captures the attention of one of the hottest hip-hop stars and record producers.

Bentley, hip-hop's bad boy, notices Dez as she auditions for the lead in his music video. She caught his eye in previous videos and he knew it was just a matter of time before she became another notch on his belt. But, as calculating as their motives are, Bentley and Dez are really feeling each other. He realizes she is more than a groupie and she knows he is not just her big break. Still focused on her dream, she seizes the opportunity when Bentley's brother, CEO of their record company, offers her a three-record deal. Dez has reached her pinnacle, things can't get better; but they can and do get worse. Secrets from her past loom overhead and the weight of them is killing her flow; she will probably lose Bentley and her record deal. And with the action of one of her enemies she could very well lose her life.

THE ROLEXXX CLUB is probably my surprise read of the year; it is frank, visual and straight-up. This book does not give us the Miami vacationers frequent. It shares the freaky nightlife of strip clubs, low-budget videos, high-powered athletes, entertainers, and young girls too eager to be famous. Ms. Smith does not sugar coat her characters or the story; she deals with the realness of people who have gone too far, and know it, but continue to go anyway. Music videos will have a different meaning for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is HOT!, July 13, 2006

I waited and waited for this book to come out. I had been hearing things about another video girl who wrote a book and people were saying it was like Karinne Steffan's book but that couldn't be farther from the truth. This book was the story of a young woman from a troubled background who had big dreams of stardom. She took some wrong roads on her journey, some willingly and some she was mislead. She stepped on people, used people, and did sleep around a lot. But under it all she had talent, and when she let herself shine she blew up. Somehow though, fame wasn't enough for her. She had money, and power, but she wanted respect. I don't want to give away too much, but I saw this story as a tale about not giving up on dreams and not letting your past determine what the rest of your life is going to be. It had all the elements: it was well written and had style, the sex scenes were off the meter, and it seemed to jump off the page and come alive. It was very real. Even the rapper Foxy Brown gave Meta Smith a shout out for writing a book so true to the rap game. I'm telling all my friends to cop this. I can't wait for her next book and would love to learn more about her.

4.0 out of 5 stars If You Can't Stand the Heat, Stay Out of Miami!, July 12, 2006
This review is from: The Rolexxx Club (Paperback)
Desiree "Dez" Mirabella Torres Jackson's life is shattered at a tender age. Leaving New York and her turbulent past behind (or so she thinks), Dez embarks on a frantic search of money, power and respect. Young and unskilled, she finds employment at the infamous Rolexxx Club in Miami, FL. On her journey, she'll cross paths with the notorious, the relentless, the rich and the elite.

Newcomer Meta Smith has announced her arrival with a very well written debut. It's hard to believe this was her first book because it appears to be told with such ease. Meta vividly captures the pains and frustrations of Dez as she searches for her place in life. Kudos to the author for taking a storyline that has been done so many times before and owning it, separating her from others.

Do not expect alot out of this book. It was slow and not a lot going on like other urban books that I read. Towards the end the pace picked up, but by then it didn't even matter. Wasn't a book and I wanted to get to the end to find out. I wanted it to end to just be done with it!!
