More About the Author

My name is Joe Schwartz, also known as Joe Rollerfan by the derby community. I've been hooked on roller derby ever since seeing the Rat City Rollergirls in 2005, and it wasn't long before I tried photographing them. Since then, I've shot more than 300 bouts and over 80 different teams, and it's still an adrenaline rush.

I created my calendar for a simple reason: I want to infect the world with roller derby. My hope is that you'll use this calendar to expose more people to our wonderful sport. Just hang it where new fans-to-be can see it, and wait for them to ask, "Whoa, what is that?!?"

Joe Rollerfan is a fabulous photographer with years of superb work in his background. He travels all over the country and attends many of the major events in the derby world. His action shots are real and compelling and I ordered the calender sight unseen, knowing full well I would be more than pleased upon its' arrival.

When writing "Down & Derby: An Insider's Guide to Derby" I combed through literally tens of thousands of photos on flickr streams and league websites. Over and over again, Joe Rollerfan's photos shined like diamonds in that mine. Having Joe's photos in my book was a real honor. Now, having Joe's photos in color on my wall every month this year will be a daily reminder of all the things there are to love about this sport. He is hands down one of the most skilled, intuitive, generous derby photographers volunteering their time to the sport. But I don't really need to tell you that - just look at the photos and they'll speak far more eloquently than I can.
