"roller derby mania" is one those lost and forgotten films, to most americans. they all say,i would never watch roller derby or even the newer rollerjam. but they did and they did,in the thousands. arenas were jammed with spectators watching this sporting event. the film "roller derby mania" is a classic next to the film "derby " and "kansas city bomber", for showing a real life sporting attraction; without sideshow antics of the wrestling programs. whether you wish to accept it or not, roller derby and rollerjam,are real sporting events. the film shows how leo seltzer, in 1937 began with a handful of skaters; to turn it into multimillion dollar industry. along the way you meet some of the skaters,who were as normal citizens off the track;as you or i. people such ann cavello, joanie weston and charlie o'connell. in adddition to the celebrities, that frequented the high banked arenas; such as humphrey bogart,lauren bacall,jack benny,farrah fawcett and raquel welch. "roler derby mania" is one those quiet little gems of a film, truly not to be missed by the true die hard fan(such as myself)or those who are curious; about a terrific sport. one;people said never watched or went to see. but they did. and they came by thousands,but no one ever watched it. but they did.

Only a portion of this "documentary" deals with Roller Derby in its beginnings. At a certain point the whole video shifts to the "Roller Games" which was nothing but a sideshow with some good skaters. No mention of the real Roller Derby is made again. Don't bother. Instead try to find "Derby"--a real documentary about the real thing on vhs, the books "Five Strides on the Banked Track" and "Roller Derby to RollerJam" tell the whole story.
