5.0 out of 5 stars Preston's Tocata IS the Tocata!
I've loved Rollerball since I was 10 years old. It's one of my favorite movies of all time and a 70's Sci-Fi classic - truly underrated! I have the DVD and I watch it regularly and it grips me everytime. The Jewison commentary is awesome!

I managed to get a vinyl copy of the album a couple years ago. It was badly scratched, but I did not care.

If you're hoping for the original Rollerball soundtrack, don't bother ordering this from Amazon. The product description is correct, the images are correct, even the packing slip shows the right information--but the product sold is totally different--frankly, they lied about which version I was getting. I managed to get a vinyl copy of the album a couple years ago. It was badly scratched, but I did not care.

Why I like the album is one simple reason - Preston's rendition of Tocatta & Fugue in D Minor. In my opinion, it IS the Tocata. No other version by any other artist compares. It was worth the whole album just for that.

It also teaches me that there is good in every situation. Although the re-make of the movie was not received well, without the re-make, I don't know if this CD would ever have been re-released.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something wich is Lost for Ever...., May 18, 2002
This review is from: Rollerball [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
I was trying many years to find it!! The Rollerball soundtrack is the best I've ever heard or better the best music I ever heard.
Andre Previn found the way to express by music the feeling of something very precious which is no longer Lost for Ever
and only our memories and the music speaks about it.....

I paid a substantial premium for what I thought was the original item, and instead was sent something totally different.

STAY AWAY from this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jonathan! Jonathan! Jonathan!, December 9, 2010
This review is from: Rollerball (OST) (Audio CD)
Great classic movie (starring John Houseman, James Caan) that tasks roller-balling to the limit! I saw this with the parents growing up and many times on television in the 1980's, as it was a preferred Saturday afternoon matinee in the city in which I had my residence. Anyhoo, The soundtrack (Andre Previn) is a classic composite of great baroque music (eerily popular in the 70's), and weird space-aged party ditties to commemorate pre-neon concepts of futuristic corporate, world takeovers and sleazy soirees that followed. I bought this jewel in the classic vinyl format, because I am not only one of those snobby audiophiles, I also pay homage to the movie's vintage roots. So, if you are a baller like me, you will love the movie and treasure the soundtrack.

Made the mistake of ordering from ImportCD's. Got the Rollerball 2002 remake cd.
Got a refund only. Still out the money to ship the wrong CD back to them.
I loved this film and the music, just can't wait to get the right movie soundtrack.

4.0 out of 5 stars Powerful classical music, September 21, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Rollerball [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
Even if you've never seen the movie, this is an excellent album to get if you like classical music. It includes Bach's "Toccata in D Minor" (listed on the album as "Toccata and Fugue"), which is the powerful opening theme of the movie, played grandly on a church organ. The album is worth it for that piece of music alone, but it has many other worthy entries, including music from Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Previn and Albinoni. Crank up your stereo system and let this album thunder out.

WARNING: there are two different "Rollerball" movies, each with their own soundtrack. There is the 1975 version (this one; the movie starred James Caan), and a 2002 version (from the remake starring Dean Cain). Twice now I have ordered this version, had the confirmation email list this version, and had the package invoice list this version... but what I received was the 2002 version. I would suggest that immediately after you order this album, you email the seller and ask them to double check their shipment to make sure that you get the correct version.

The description is for the soundtrack from the 1974 movie. The product sent by the vendor was for the 2002 remake. Don't trust this vendor to know anything about what they are selling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album, May 6, 2004

Previn scored a superb psychedelic funk track in "Executive Party Dance". Sparse, with great wah guitar and analogue synth, pick up this album for that track alone!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally!!!, May 25, 2002
This review is from: Rollerball [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
After hoping what seemed to be a pointless hope the soundtrack for the mid-70's masterful movie of the same name has reappeared out of nowhere. So Norman Jewison and others finally realized that movie soundtracks like this are hardly released anymore owing an exceptional quality to the enormous use of classical masterpieces on here? Once one knows the movie one relives the accompanying scenes upon playback. Bach's Tocatta in D minor played at nearly perfect pace( the piece is often sped up by organists the world over leaving out the reverberating omniscience of the chords), one imagines the clean silent rollerbal track before speed, blood, and power have been ridden over it. The soundtrack is worth it for this track alone. Several of Shostakovich's works, some more beautiful than others, as well as two seveties party-funk pieces composed by Andre Previn showing that the composer's talents were not only limited to the classical convervatorium of music, but that he also had a keen ear for the contemporary. One can imagine the decadent drugged out rollerballers and their girlfriends mingling with the executives in tuxedos with no-back dresses. The soundtrack is at once a homage to the tragedies of violence and power and their existential effects. The choice of music carries the sheer might of the game scenes as well the quiet reflections that pervade James Caan's character throughout the film.
