Texas Hippie Coalition - Turn It Up

Biography

Rock ‘n’ roll is all about cutting loose. It’s about throwing back a few drinks, raising your hands, banging your head, and living out loud. Texas Hippie Coalition cook up the soundtrack to your “good time” with their fourth full-length album, Ride On [Carved Records]. Their countrified blues riffs simmer with metallic edge, while each chorus ignites a ... Read more in Amazon's Texas Hippie Coalition Store

Review

"Kick-ass, no nonsense, hard rock. In your face. Loud and heavy. The way rock should be." --Eddie Trunk, VH1 and Sirius/XM Satellite

Product Description

Upon first glance at the Texas Hippie Coalition, one may come to the conclusion that they are an intimidating group that lives up to the cliche of their nickname 'band of outlaws.' However, looking a little closer at lead vocalist Big Dad Ritch, bassist John Exall, guitarists Randy Cooper and Crawfish, and drummer Cody Bailey, it's hard to ignore that they are indeed much more than meets the eye. They are a loyal and talented 'band of brothers' who consider themselves just as much family as they are band mates. 'We're as southern as southern can be,' says Big Dad Ritch, the behemoth frontman and centrifugal force behind Texas Hippie Coalition. 'Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, ZZ Top, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson-we're as outlaw as we can get, while at the same time having the power of that Texas groove, like Pantera. We're metal with a southern rock and roll spirit. We are a band of outlaws.

5.0 out of 5 stars THC ROCKS July 25, 2010
By DST
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Reading a couple of these reviews, people expected to hear the next masterpiece or something. This is rock & roll people, not Mozart. THC aren't even trying to make the next Sgt. Pepper for pete's sake. They suppose to make a butt kicking hard rock album & they delivered in my humble opinion. Big Dad Ritch's vocals are really strong while the rest of the band are playing some heavy riffs here. Good job guys, I can't wait for the next album. Rock on THC!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Southern swamp done right! August 16, 2013
By Sandman
Format:Audio CD
I love southern style hard rock/metal and this band has that sound in spades! Great vocals, catchy riffage and great grooves. I'm surprised they're not massively famous yet as the material is that this good. My only gripe about this release is the sound quality. It seems a little tinny or thin in places. I think it could have used a few more hours of production tweaking. Other than that, it gets two thumbs up from me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Red River Native (as if it matters) May 1, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I'm from the Red River valley (south) area originally, but I don't remember it at all. Moved away at a very early age. So when I heard about the Red River metal or whatever it's being called, I had to check it out. I haven't spent much time in the south, but I have found that I love southern metal, or at the good stuff, which is funny because I like a lot of terrible things.

But the THC is anything but terrible. The lyrics aren't always as polished as I'd like, but I give Judas Priest a pass so these guys are a league above that tripe. It'd be easy to ignore given the driving metal they pump out, but Big Dad Ritch's vocals are fun, really fun. Each time it seems like he's going to fall into an old tired and overused approach, he seems to change it up just enough to keep me interested.

They bring an energetic and exciting voice to southern metal and - along with the Showdown - are one of my new favorites as I slip back into really loving metal. Very little screaming, creative use of vocals in a few places, and hard driving rhythms, expert distortion, and just enough taking themselves too seriously.

If you like metal, you'll probably like THC. Start with Pissed Off. It's the heavy rotation track but there's a reason. The only one I'm not real fond of is Groupie Girl.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real, Heavy, straight up Rock! March 16, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
If you like it loud and heavy, this will not disappoint. Not only is it good quality, high octane heavy metal, you can understand the lyrics. Well, I can anyway. Seriously folks, if you really long for seriously heavy music, this is it. It's well worth the price. I just wish the earlier albums were easier to come by. There's a reason why the early ones cost so much on here. This band is that good. I'm not going to rate or review individual songs. Just trust this: if you like it loud and heavy, you will love this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Texas Red Dirt music like you've never heard November 8, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is THCs first album and it kicks ass imagine if Waylon Willie Johnny Cash and ZZ Top formed a metal band and THC is what you would get Big Dad is the best frontman out there today better than the gazillion cookie cutter American Idol rejects that pollute the airwaves today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why doesn't this get more attention? April 14, 2014
By Don
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I love this album, I find it sad that good bands like this don't get more attention than all of this crap "hard" pop-rock " crap that dominates the mainstream airwaves. Yes, the lyrics are simple, but the vocals and music more than make up for it. If you like groups like Black Label Society then you'll probably enjoy this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lone Star Mayhem Done RIGHT April 4, 2014
By Ploaty1
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This cats just do this kinda stuff right, no nonsense heads down power and 'tude, a lot of bands TRY and cop this, few ever get it right, I've got BOTH their platters, take it from a dude who was THERE for the likes of BLUE CHEER,CREAM, JIMI, ZEP, you name it, forget the pansies, this thing is just lethal, kinda like when the fella is bashing to hockey bus in "SLAPSHOT", because he's making it "look mean?", well, THIS is what he'd be listening to, just buy this, pull up next to some square with it blasting at death volume, and watch his face, this is just bellicose, low slung, and scares the *&^% out of squares, that ALONE makes it a NEEDED purchase, bands like this DESERVE your support, so that they'll keep unleashing stuff like this, roll on, brothers, roll on!
