Book Description

This book fills a need in the literature by presenting a unified, up-to-date approach to the analysis of rolling bearing performance and is aimed at developing a basic understanding of rolling bearing operation. Going beyond the earlier editions, this Third Edition explores in greater detail such topics as materials, methods of testing and evaluation of test data, methods of lubrication and their usages. Also covers the initial development of a substantially improved and more accurate fatigue life theory. To accomplish this, early chapters discuss the simplest elements of rolling bearings such as basic bearing types, geometry, loading of single balls and rollers, contract stresses and deformations. Following this complex analysis of load distribution among the rolling elements, speeds and velocities, elastohydrodynamic lubrication, statistics of bearing endurance, fatigue life, friction and temperature are considered. Examples are included to clarify and highlight important concepts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic revision, February 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A colleague of mine had the fourth edition which was packed with information. The 5th edition is totally reorganized and methods for bearing analysis are established which make older methods obsolete. Older methods focused primarily of a statistical guess of life based on Hertz stress only. Harris' new edition leaves behind this theory and gives material allowables for fatigue and provides methods for including all stresses (shear, residual, Hertz) in the calculation of life.

Having recently experienced the textbook fiasco where publishers simply release a new edition without any significant benefit to the buyer, this revision was a breath of fresh air. All well as providing new critical information of bearing life analysis, the general organization of the book is simply way better than prior revisions.

As far as Harris' books in general, it is really THE source of information if you actually want to understand bearings. The new layout of the book makes it a much better starting place than it was in the past. It starts simple and adds layers of understanding as you progress through the book. Previous revisions we a lot more overwhelming.
