5.0 out of 5 stars If you like rock and roll...you'll love this. January 3, 2000
By Jackie
Format:Audio CD
What a great CD! I have a radio show that focuses on women in music, and I got this CD for christmas this year. I was more impressed with it after I listened to it, finding gems like Belly's "Feed the Tree," Lucinda Williams' "Side of the Road," Gladys Knight and the Pips' "Midnight Train to Georgia" and even Dionne Warwick's "Walk on By" sounding even better among other top women's music of the times. Rolling Stone shows a strong interest in women's music not only through this album but also through their book 'Women in Rock' which goes hand in hand with this album (check it out too). Some of the people Rolling Stone could've included in this compilation are Joni Mitchell (I am really surprised she doesn't appear on here), Siouxie Sioux, Karen Carpenter, and Liz Phair, but the collection they do have should only be added to, nothing should be removed. This is an anthology for women of our times, an anthology of anyone who likes rock and roll, and it should be a staple in any music lover's collection.

Athough RS couldn't possibly include ALL the incredible women who made significant contributions to rock era on one collection, these choices are truly representative including archive classics like Patsy Cline's "Crazy," the Supremes' breakthrough hit "Stop in the Name of Love" & plenty of other gems.

It's fun listening!

4.0 out of 5 stars It's great, but... September 9, 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
...how could they overlook such artists as Blondie, Paula Cole, and (gasp!) Alanis Morrisette? How could you, Rolling Stone? I hope they make up for this terrible mistake. In spite of it, I really liked this album. Every CD in the album gets better than the others; my personal favorite was the second one (1972-1986), with singers like Pat Benatar, Chrissie Hynde, and Annie Lennox but I just loved the whole collection, so pleeeease, do release a new, improved version with more artists. All in all, this collection is a great buy, so do yourself a favor and take it home.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Beginning... August 13, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
...as long as Rolling Stone puts out another one, and soon! If they had been thinking they would have put out a top 50 (this compliation features 48 artists) and could have followed up with another 50. Then they could have waited a year and sold a 6 disc box set of The 100 Greatest Women In Rock. Still, there is no one on this collection who shouldn't be, and I am amazed at how well selected the best song by each artist was. Top quality overall.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Collection - But a Few Artists Are Missing January 12, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
A great collection of some of the most influential women in rock. And some that may not have been influential, but are extremely entertaining nonetheless. A few notables are missing, however. Where is Fleetwood Mac, Blondie, Tracey Chapman, Hole and the Indigo Girls, 10,000 Maniacs and possibly Bonnie Rait? Even with these missing influential artists, the cd collection provides hours of outstanding music!
