If you like rock and roll...you'll love this.,

What a great CD! I have a radio show that focuses on women in music, and I got this CD for christmas this year. I was more impressed with it after I listened to it, finding gems like Belly's "Feed the Tree," Lucinda Williams' "Side of the Road," Gladys Knight and the Pips' "Midnight Train to Georgia" and even Dionne Warwick's "Walk on By" sounding even better among other top women's music of the times. Rolling Stone shows a strong interest in women's music not only through this album but also through their book 'Women in Rock' which goes hand in hand with this album (check it out too). Some of the people Rolling Stone could've included in this compilation are Joni Mitchell (I am really surprised she doesn't appear on here), Siouxie Sioux, Karen Carpenter, and Liz Phair, but the collection they do have should only be added to, nothing should be removed. This is an anthology for women of our times, an anthology of anyone who likes rock and roll, and it should be a staple in any music lover's collection.

It's great, but...,

...how could they overlook such artists as Blondie, Paula Cole, and (gasp!) Alanis Morrisette? How could you, Rolling Stone? I hope they make up for this terrible mistake. In spite of it, I really liked this album. Every CD in the album gets better than the others; my personal favorite was the second one (1972-1986), with singers like Pat Benatar, Chrissie Hynde, and Annie Lennox but I just loved the whole collection, so pleeeease, do release a new, improved version with more artists. All in all, this collection is a great buy, so do yourself a favor and take it home.

A Great Beginning...,

...as long as Rolling Stone puts out another one, and soon! If they had been thinking they would have put out a top 50 (this compliation features 48 artists) and could have followed up with another 50. Then they could have waited a year and sold a 6 disc box set of The 100 Greatest Women In Rock. Still, there is no one on this collection who shouldn't be, and I am amazed at how well selected the best song by each artist was. Top quality overall.

A Great Collection - But a Few Artists Are Missing,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Rolling Stone Women In Rock Collection (Audio CD)
A great collection of some of the most influential women in rock. And some that may not have been influential, but are extremely entertaining nonetheless. A few notables are missing, however. Where is Fleetwood Mac, Blondie, Tracey Chapman, Hole and the Indigo Girls, 10,000 Maniacs and possibly Bonnie Rait? Even with these missing influential artists, the cd collection provides hours of outstanding music!

Athough RS couldn't possibly include ALL the incredible women who made significant contributions to rock era on one collection, these choices are truly representative including archive classics like Patsy Cline's "Crazy," the Supremes' breakthrough hit "Stop in the Name of Love" & plenty of other gems. It's fun listening!

I wasn't as impressed with this collection as I thought I would be. A lot of the songs were ones I had either never heard or disliked because of the complete lack of talent the performer displayed, and some of the songs were rap or R&B instead of rock. I liked about half the songs on each CD.

I agree with everyone on here that much is missing from this collection. But besides that the tracks included are wonderful! I hope Rolling Stone comes out with another one that includes people left out such as Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac etc. Wasn't "hound dog" on the first disk awsome!? Big Mama Thorton could kick Elvis's but any day!!

Good but missing so much,

I liked the disk, but I wondered about the glaring omissions of Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac -- one of the premiere women in rock -- and some other artists, namely: Heart, Hole, Barbra Streisand and Joni Mitchell. And where's some of Country's best women? I'm just glad the skanky Mariah Carey or overexposed Celine Dion weren't included.

If there was a fourth CD...,

In the immortal words of Frank Costanza, "Rolling Stone, What the hell were you thinking?!" No Joni Mitchell? Half the artists on this list reference her and Patsy Cline as influences to their music. Easily six or so artists could've been bumped onto a fourth CD to make room for some of the other women listed by other reviewers. By the way, BS (Britney Spears), should not be on the list! There's the biggest Disney Corp sell-out there ever was!
