great pictures!,

This review is from: The Rolling Stones : A Life on the Road (Hardcover)
I have been a Stones fan for a long time and own several picture/coffee table books about them already, but I bought this book immediately after it was published in London. This volume has some of the greatest tour photography in it that I have ever seen. Only Annie Leibovitz' photo documentation of their 1975 American tour (some of it is included here)comes close to it. The book is a high quality production, both the color and the black and white images are very, very good. Do not buy this book for the text or a comprehensive road history of the Stones. That is the only weak point here (hence 4 and not 5 stars): the text, mostly quotes, is definitely weak. But there are other Stones books for that. This book is for the seasoned fan who is excited about reliving some of the greatest concert moments in these wonderful pictures, some of which have never been published before.

A Good Coffee Table Book To Impress Company,
This review is from: The Rolling Stones : A Life on the Road (Hardcover)
"A Life On The Road" .......... An impressive cover , hardback , looks great on the coffee table. Some of the photos are fresh and never been seen by myself before. However this is a compilation of quotations mainly. There are no new stories etc. I was expecting (per the books title) raunchy , exciting , interesting road stories. Silly me???? Once again , the books appearence is the most impressive portion of of this $38 investment. Pick up a copy of "Up & Down With The Rolling Stones" by Tony Sanchez. It is still the best Stones book I had ever read and I believe that I have read them all.

The Rolling Stones : A Life on the Road, Is A Classic,
By Jah Keef (The Redlands) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Rolling Stones : A Life on the Road (Hardcover)
Allo Darling, This Is Jah Keef, I Must Recommend Life On The Road If Your A Stones Fan. This Is One Of The Most Beautiful Books Ever Done On The Stones. It Covers Every Tour From The Early Days At The Crawdaddy Club To The 75 Tour Of The Americas To 1997/1998's Bridges To Babylon Tour. The Photos In This Book Are The Real Stars, They Are Very Wonderful, From Pictures On Stage To Ones Off Stage, Just Lounging In The Voodoo Lounge To Relaxing On Tour. The Interviews Very Nicely Compliment The Photos And It Is Very Well Put Together, The Price For This Book Maybe A Bit Steep But This Is The Stones, It's Worth It, Plus One Glance At The Photos In This 400 Page Plus Book And You Will Know Why It's A Classic

Highly anticipated book on the World's Greatest Rock'n'Roll Band... left nothing to be wished for! Text and pictures show this is the work of a true insider, especially to the tour life and the back stage scene. I happen to own more than 200 books on the Stones, this one ranks among the best five, in the company of strictly limited, much higher priced British publications. Congratulations to both authors for their thorough but never indiscreet interviews with the crew and the band members themselves, and of course to all the talented (and lucky!) photographers! This book is a MUST for all Stones fans!

Good, but nothing controversial covered.,

This review is from: The Rolling Stones : A Life on the Road (Hardcover)
I expected something more along the lines of the excellent compilation of the 1975 Tour of the Americas, with photos by Annie Leibovitz and Christopher Sykes, entitled "The Rolling Stones on Tour". There's no real sense of road life at all in "Life on the Road", little of the drudgery, shake-downs, nutters, hangovers, boredom, backstage problems, groupies, excitement after good shows, etc. And no photos at all that would make you think, "Ah! Now that photographer was there at a really special moment." A valiant effort, but basically a squeaky-clean job by two well-intending people, both close to the Stones, both obviously fond of them, but eager to clear the slate as much as possible of the controversy and turmoil that has both hampered and enhanced the Stones' music. Are the Stones getting ready to retire?

Uneven glorfication of the current Stones.,

This review is from: The Rolling Stones : A Life on the Road (Hardcover)
THe book is just uneven and self glorifying. Not nearly enough sixties pictures in here and again they pick on Brian and Mick Taylor the two best musicians to play with the group. Of course Brian is given no credit for starting the band. Frankly looking at photos of the Stones past the seventies (let alone hearing a good amount of their post Tatoo You music) is pretty horrid and they take up probably a good two thirds of the book. Skip it and buy Wyman's fantastic Rolling With The Stones. He is much more self aware as far as what the Stones best era was and is much more even handed assessing the groups talents.

This has some great photos, and good quotes by the Stones themselves. I had, though, seen their video "25 x 5" and thought it cheating to reproduce in this book quotes that I'd already seen them say in that video. But most of the quotes are new. And seeing all they've done on the road, singing to stadiums full of people, made me sometimes think as I looked through it that that is the only life worth living. I've seen the Stones live, and when they come out, it is such an adrenaline rush that goes through the audience. Can you imagine the adrenaline rush of the guys on stage!
