Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-5?These activity-oriented overviews try too hard to be all things for all people. They offer tips for collecting, housing, and caring for the animals; suggest some simple ways to develop observation skills; and outline over a half dozen related experiments that involve testing the invertebrates' responses to various stimuli. (The books state that there is no need to "...hurt or kill anything," but a couple of rolypolies die as a result of being immersed in water.) The creatures' physical characteristics, life cycles, and behavior are briefly described. Attractive full-color photographs and labeled diagrams of body parts are included. However, the frequent facetious comments, use of slang, bits of anthropomorphism, fictionalization, and the cartoons detract from the generally scientific approach. Also, the observation activities, which emphasize pretending and play, will appeal most to primary-grade children, while the vocabulary and content of the rest of the material seem geared toward middle and upper-grade audiences. Molly McLaughlin's Earthworms, Dirt and Rotten Leaves (Atheneum, 1986) is more thorough and presents a greater number of experiments. Information on rolypolies (also called pillbugs, wood lice, etc.) is available in many other books.?Karey Wehner, San Francisco Public Library

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book for kids who like to play with bugs, June 23, 1999
By A Customer
This book has information about rolypolies, which are my son's favorite bugs. It also has many activities you can do with rolypolies, such as making a rolypoly hotel, a rolypoly playground, racing rolled up rolypolies down a ramp, and much more.

These activities seem pretty silly to me as a parent, but the kids loved them. The book also encourages the kids to observe many different things about the bugs and their behaviors. Heightening the kids awareness of small details is a good skill the kids can apply to other activities.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As a homeschooling mom of 3, I was thrilled to find Rolypolyology. We originally checked it out of the library, but enjoyed it so much, we bought our own copy--a rare occurrence for this frugal mom.

Rolypolyology has lots of interesting facts. For example, did you know that rolypolies (pill bugs) are crustaceans, and their closest relatives are lobsters, crabs, and shrimp? They live for several years, and females carry their babies in a pouch like kangaroos do.

In addition to interesting facts, it has lots of activities to do with rolypolies (build habitats, make playgrounds, conduct harmless experiments). Rolypolies can be found in just about any backyard, and their squeamishness factor is very low, so they make a perfect study.

Rolypolyology is written on about a 3rd grade reading level, and younger children could understand most of it. Whether your kids are homeschooled or just show an interest in bugs, this is a great and entertaining book to add to your collection.
