5.0 out of 5 stars Know your Roman glass, October 10, 2007

This review is from: Roman Glass in the Corning Museum of Glass (Volume I) (Hardcover)
This is one of the works a collector of ancient glass should have. It is more or less together with other books by Whitehouse and ie. Harden and Fleming that form the basis of the library of the collector of ancient glass.
Text and pictures are perfect, the descriptions of the shown objects are well balanced and educating, excellent and for the collector "mouth watering" reading. The latter because the shown objects are rare and very hard to find for the average collector.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superbly illustrated catalog of ancient Roman glass, February 22, 2007

This review is from: Roman Glass in the Corning Museum of Glass (Volume I) (Hardcover)
Volumes I and II of this three-catalog series are absolutely superb references for Roman glass. All three catalogs are very well-illustrated, and each item is described in more detail than is typically seen in collection catalogs. Volume II has some of the more superior examples from the Corning Museum, whereas Volume I has some of the more basic forms that are cheap and readily available on the market. Volume III has some small-scale objects, like intaglios and gems, and random late acquisitions that didn't make the first two volumes; of the three, the last is arguably the least useful, albeit still a great reference to have. My only complaint would be that these books represent a sizable investment for a collector -- these are not starter references, but rather books to acquire for someone who already has an invested, developed interest in Roman glass.
