Editorial Reviews

On CD for the first time two best-selling albums from
legendary guitarist Tony Mottola. Roman Guitar was a worldwide
best seller when first released in 1960, while Mr. Big offers
standards from the Great American Songbook including three
tunes composed and performed for the hit TV series Danger
directed by Yul Brynner.

The performance is fine, but the sound quality of this CD reissue is not up to what we hear on the Command CD reissues of the Persuassive and Provacative Percussion albums. On this release, there are less high frequencies and the accordian comes across with the slightest bit of distortion. Is this the fault of the 50 year old master tape? Possibly but it's not clear that the producers used master tapes. The CD notes speak of possibly audible "surface noise" and the use of CEDAR audio noise reduction. I don't usually hear of "surface noise" in reference to tapes. Surface noise is an lp problem but maybe the terminology is different in the U.K (from where this CD originates). Either way, it sounds as if the sound engineers where a bit heavy handed with the noise reduction. While it does a great job of reducing noise artifacts, it reduces some high frequencies as well. That said, I don't think I could have done a better transfer with my home lp-to-digital gear.

Isn't it amazing how picky folks can be regarding reissues of old recordings?!

First, this recording is at the 50 year mark. I wonder just WHAT some people EXPECT for a popular music album from all those years ago! Command has been LONG GONE for all these many years, and, I easily surmise, so have any masters that they had. The "general popularity" of the Command issues died somewhere in the 80's I would think.

So, for "us few" who still treasure and love these old "sonic spectaculars" from so long ago, a reissue like this (in good sound, considering the circumstances of time, etc.) is actually a Very Happy Event....PERIOD! If you loved these albums by Tony Mottola as I did (and perhaps have wished for and long-awaited a CD release) I would urge you to quickly order yourself a copy of this issue...it may not be available for very long and may likely never be issued again.

There is very good documentation, and the original liner notes, in the accompanying booklet (unlike my other recent review of the compiled Persuasive/Provocative Percussion here Persuasive Percussion 1, 2, 3/Provocative 1,2).
These additional cds sound perfectly acceptable (again, considering how fortunate we are to even have them) and the 3-disc set really only "falls short" because of the absence of ANY documentation, etc. You may wish to read my review under the link provided.

Here's hoping that you, too, enjoy hearing these wonderful Tony Mottola (and the additionally-mentioned Percussion albums) again as I have!

I had this on 33 1/3 about 30 years ago and I had gotten rid of the records when I moved. I was overjoyed to see it re-released again on CD! Tony was the greatest guitar player ever!

I really enjoy Tony Mottola and this CD is no exception with one warning that some of the selections (like cut 1, album 1) were produced to show the stereophonic sound of left and right speakers. The constant back-and-worth from speaker to speaker is just plain annoying. That said, the other cuts are just what you would expect from Mr. Motola. A crisp and energetic guitar style with arrangements that make the tunes come alive. Good stuff, thanks Tony.
