Ronald Mellor demonstrates that Roman historical writing was regarded by its authors as a literary, not a scholarly exercise, and how it must be evaluated in that context.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Mellor has a comprehensive view of Roman historiography and has included nearly all of the Roman historians... and all the major genres that treat the Roman past. He is, moreover, consistently sympathetic to his subject and tries to treat the Roman historians on their own terms. --John Marincola, Phoenix.
Mellor's qualifications are impeccable and very few scholars could have produced such an accessible and informative introduction to Roman historiography.
–Religious Studies Review

excelent textbook, attractively written.
AJP

Sometime in my scholarly career, I hope to write a book as helpful as Professor Mellor's study of the Roman historians Sallust, Livy, Tacitus, Suetonius, and Ammianus Marcellinus..

About the Author

Ronald Mellor is Professor of History at UCLA. He is the author of Tacitus (1993) and The Historians of Ancient Rome: An Anthology (1997), both published by Routledge.
