Lots of Photos and that's All Folks, July 31, 2009
This review is from: Roman Mosaics: Over 60 Full-Color Images from the 4th Through the 13th Centuries (Paperback)
The sub-title of this book says it all - over 60 full colour images from the 4th through the 13th centuries - and I wish I'd realised when I bought it that its a book of photos with no accompanying text at all.
I bought the book wanting to learn about Roman mosaic techniques and what place mosaics had in home decoration, worship etc. I was also hoping to be able to study Roman mosaics to get inspiration for my own mosaic work - andamenti, colour selection etc.
When the book arrived I was immediately disappointed because it didn't meet these expectations. The mosaics pictured are beautiful and interesting but are in many cases photographed from some distance away so it's hard to see the details.
The book feels flimsy, with a thin cover that makes it seem a bit magazine-like.
Buy the book if you're after pictures only. For photos plus text I suggest you take a look at a book called Tunisian Mosaics instead.
