From Booklist
Gr. 6-9. From the Working Life series, this volume focuses on the changing roles and power of senators through nearly 12 centuries of Roman history. Along the way, Nardo also offers a great deal of information about significant events and the social structure of Rome. While the sidebars are often interesting, they are sometimes poorly coordinated with the text. In one case, the same lengthy passage from a speech by Hannibal is quoted in both the text and an accompanying sidebar. Still, this is well organized and intelligently written, and much of the information is not readily available in books accessible to readers at this grade level. Black-and-white illustrations, mainly reproductions of prints and paintings, appear throughout. Back matter includes source notes, a chronology, and annotated lists of recommended books, Internet sources, and works consulted. Also available is Nardo's A Roman Gladiator. Carolyn Phelan
